This mod reintroduces the pet backpack from petai before version 3.0.0. This mod is open for adoption.
Known Issues
German shephard pup in backpack from outside might appear white.
Picking up of corgis and wolfdog pups has been temporarily disabled due to crashes.

I did a quick check and you are right. In my tests it also applied to dogs. I will stay true to not uploading updates for this, but I will explain the issue if anyone wants to fix/ adopt this.
The animals in the game that can take items into their mouths do not actually do what you might think they do. In reality their mouth is actually their left hand (If you want to know more about this, I recommend checking out the vanilla EntityBehaviorMouthInventory). This however leads to their lefthand overriding the players lefthand and therefore moving the offhand item.
TL;DR; To fix this, locate the "LeftHand" attachment point in the backpack shape files and remove them. glarmer

Thanks for uploading this mod, it's fun and makes it a lot easier to move pets out of tricky situations. I know you say you won't update this past initial release, but I figured I'd document this bug where having a cat in the backpack causes the offhand item to appear in its head - it didn't happen when I had a dog in my pack.
