This is a fork of: A Panserbjørn Story

If the author desires this to be taken down, i will do so immediately.

This mod allows for the taming and riding of bears, it requires: Jaunt and Pet AI

Aside being a fork of the original, but updated, i took the time to implement rideability and wearables for the bears.

Thus far only the bigger types of bear are rideable, these being polar and brown bears.

Any feedback, complaints or whatever, feel free to post here or ping me in the VS discord server.

oh, the bears are from a story (his dark materials, by philip pullman). they are sentient, forge and wear their own armour from meteoric iron and are impossible to trick

Also, the VS Launcher doesn't know how to download Jaunt for your mod.  I *think* the problem is that you're not declaring version numbers in your modinfo (although I didn't look too carefully -- maybe you're not spelling out the mod name correctly?)

Anyway, if you're not accepting patches, can you add me as a team member with edit permissions, share the code and I'll patch a) the handbook, b) the brown bear problem c) the "other bear" not eating meat, and d) fix the auto download problem?

If it's on github I can get everything fixed by tomorrow night.

its not that i am not accepting, i got a full list of things to do, id prefer to stick to it, also this a content mod so it does not have github.

bout the launcher, aye i aint declaring version numbers, so it is backwards compatible.

What if there's a bug in Jaunt?  Forget not being able to download it... what if there's a world breaking bug?  You'd let people use a bugged Jaunt?

It sounds like you've got your hands full.  I'll fork a separate bear taming mod and add my fire-avoidance code.

The mod's taming system is a little broken.   Here's how to fix it:

  • The handbook really should mention that Black Bears are not tameable with meat because _vanilla_ Black Bears (as well as bears IRL) are omnivores.  Go camping and leave hotdogs out, and see what happens!  But aside from that, vanilla bears eating meat but not being tamed by meat violates the Principle of Least Surprise, so it should be documented.

  • Brown bears are not tameable by meat either, because your handling of the variant types is broken.  Your patch uses "bear-brown-*-adult" but 1.22.3 brown bear codes are shaped like "bear-brown-adult-male" and "bear-brown-adult-female".   So what happens is that you patch a mount point in the assets that doesn't exist.  What happens in the code is that brown bears don't match your "bear-brown-*-adult" pattern, so they "fall through the hole" and are treated like every other bear, which are not tameable by meat.

  • The broken patching occurs exactly where it matters the most - treatByType and acceptStacksByType, so you'll need to fix it in both places.

  • Instead of including "Non-brown bears are not tameable by meat" in the handbook, please consider making ALL bears tameable by meat.  Not only is this "real life" behavior, and not only is this the vanilla Vintage Story behavior, but brown bears are a capstone animal.  Lesser bears should not be "harder" to tame in the sense that they have less options for tameable behavior.

  • I just sent you patches to fix everything on discord.

If you can patch the mod sometime today I'd be very grateful.

I've have success using honeycomb, but not raw meat.

Are there any plans to add cubs/breeding to the mod?

Thank you for resurrecting this mod!

Can't seem to be able to tame bears at all. Do you have to click with the meat on them?
EDIT: Seem to be getting an error. Not sure why.

Spectacular work!

The health value of various bears is the same and only 20, far inferior to the original bear.

I remember seeing that original mod and being surprised that no one had forked it yet 🐐⌚
