Natural Fertilizer

Natural Fertilizer introduces a simple but immersive manure system to Vintage Story.
Domesticated animals now periodically defecate, leaving droppings in the world that can be collected and processed into fertilizer.

Features & Mechanics

  • Animal Manure: Domesticated animals naturally produce dung over time, when fed.

  • Dung Piles: Droppings accumulate in stages and can be combined into larger piles.

  • Fertilizer Use: Manure piles can be composted directly on the ground, or in barrels, to produce fertilizer that can improve farmland soil for better fertility.

  • Smart Placement: The system avoids overwriting important blocks like chicken eggs, nests, or other droppings.

  • Configurable Rules: Forbidden overwrite targets are configurable via JSON for modpack balance.

  • Immersive Gameplay: Droppings appear naturally in barns, pastures and pens, encouraging players to manage livestock waste as a resource.

What this mod currently changes/adds:

  • Animals fed from troughs or food thrown on the ground, will produce droppings after a random time.
  • Manure can be processed into fertilizer in two immersive methods: ground piles or fermented in a barrel.
  • Fertilizers can be used on tilled farmland, just like any other fertilizer in the game.

Animals that currently can produce manure:

    • Pigs
    • Sheep
    • Chickens
    • All variants of Hares
    • All variants of Goats

Fertilizer properties:

  Fertilizer type: N P K
Weak fertilizer 15% 4% 4%
Medium fertilizer 25% 6% 6%
  •

Compatibility:

Roadmap:

    • Compatibility with various creature mods.
    • Add more configuration options to easier adapt use and compatibility. (WIP)
    • Add configurations for each animals chance to defecate and amount of manure. (WIP)
    • Manure piles left on the ground for long periods of time, without mixing with grass to start fermentation, will transit to a low value fertilizer.
    • Weather effects processing time for open air compost piles.
    • Flies buzz over piles of manure and storage that contain manure.
    • Wheelbarrow for transporting large amounts of manure.
    • Add proper compost bin, to avert from using barrels.
    • Variations in fertilizers, depending on what type of manure is used, and what is mixed with the manure.
    • Proper handbook guide with explanations of mechanics and uses of it's content.
    •

Sometimes, scooping up chicken droppings give you no dung at all

xXx_Ape_xXx , Aug 5th at 12:39 PM
@Foxtrot88: Sometimes, scooping up chicken droppings give you no dung at all

That is rng playing you tricks, as the droprate is low for just a single piece to actually give you something to collect.
For chicken droppings it's best to let it accumulate a bit, for guaranteed drop.

On that note, I am working on separating the various droppings into their own type of manure, to make mixed fertilizers.
Still a wip, and no idea when I'll get time to finish it at this moment..

morlanius, Aug 2nd at 7:29 PM

Could you make the dung throwable in the same way a pebble is throwable?

Madalovin, 2 days ago
@morlanius: Could you make the dung throwable in the same way a pebble is throwable?

I second this, lets me roleplay as a toxic dark souls player who throws dung at foes, lmao.

Anyone else having issue when trying to seal manure in a barrel with the correct amount of water, its not working for me?

zombiie, Jun 21st at 7:23 PM
@xXx_Ape_xXx: Did you also add the needed grass?

I feel like iv'e tried every combo I can think of but the poop...the poop outwitts me.
I have tried picking up manure with a bucket so it can be used as a liquid but wont let me?

xXx_Ape_xXx , Jun 21st at 8:07 PM
@zombiie: I feel like iv'e tried every combo I can think of but the poop...the poop outwitts me.I have tried picking up manure with a bucket so it can be used as a liquid but wont let me?

The ratios are 1L water 5 manure

Start with the water. 10L water, then add 50 manure.

This will produce 50L of slurry.

Then add a full stack of grass to complete the mixture, and seal the barrel for it to ferment.

As for the manure, you can also stack them on the ground in piles of 32, and add 64 grass till it says "Fermenting".

Dragon poops- while it would be the normal poo tones, the first image that came to mind was the neopets rainbow dung.

Amazing, would be so cool if even wild animals could poop sometime and we can just run across poop ! For imersion !!!

Sirenne, Jun 13th at 6:38 PM (modified Jun 13th at 6:44 PM)

We love this mod! One suggestion - would it be possible to make a manure shovel that only works on poop? With our traits I pick up dirt in just a couple milliseconds, so I end up digging up the dirt instead of the poop if I miss. Just a little suggestion! <3

We need... a POOPER SCOOPER!

I think that adding a function mode to a shovel would be better for the overall functionality of the game system and item management. Scythe already has such option, why not expand it?

Sirenne, Jun 19th at 1:48 AM
@Sirenne: Oooh, great idea!

Could also put some code on it that the tool in that mode prioritizes poop instead of whatever else is on the tile, so you don't have to fight to get the critters out of the way to scoop it up.

Galm1, Jun 10th at 12:51 AM

My buddies make fun of me for using the poop mod but this is genuinly one of my favorite mods. It makes acquiring nitrogen fertilizer so much easier and adds additional depth to animal husbandry as a mechanic. Genuinly one of my favorite farming mods.

Raek, Jun 3rd at 1:37 AM

Hey, ah...how do you make the manure piles for fermenting? I've been piling up the stuff and it's not doing anything. It says they're made of wood, but...er. There's no recipe.

Do I keep piling it in one spot until it does something? Otherwise everything else seems to work.

Pile it in one spot on the ground till it reaches max (32 manure) and then add 64 grass. It will change texture as you add the grass, and should say fermenting when you have added enough grass.

Or, mix it in a barrel with water, then add grass and close the lid to start fermentation. The ratio is in the handbook.

Will add a more in-depth handbook entry in the next release.

Oh! Well, that makes sense. And here I've been a bit of a derp on that.

In that case, I'll try precisely that. Mn. Thank you, this is greatly appreciated, and I can share the info with the server now since...ah, they were a little confused too.

Filvandrel, Jun 1st at 8:12 AM

Love the mod! :D
I have one suggestion - would it be possible to add a fertilizer bag, which would store the fertilizer items and spread it on 3x3 space? It would be a really great addition :)

UN MOD NECESARIO VANILLA, sin duda un muy muy buen mod, le doy mis mas sinceras adulaciones al creador.

Nyklone, May 27th at 11:28 PM

This is a shitty mod in all the best ways :D The roadmap already contains almost everything I can suggest.

Maybe one day, menure could be used to waddle and daub, as that was a thing.
Maybe if manure from different animals gets different stats, it would be cool if pig manure, uncollected, slowly turns the pig sty into a muddy mess?

Wattle and daub... hmm, now that IS a thing that is still done. I'll contemplate it, no promises.

Benky, May 27th at 2:11 AM

I get two errors (Patch 0 and 1) in the medieval expansion patch entity-patches.json, it seems to be calling on Medieval Expansion Patch's Aurochs male and female json files that the built in compatibility isn't able to find. So far it hasn't caused a crash or lag or anything like that, just a bug testing FYI lol

Granted, I have a heavily modded game, but the latest version has simply stopped working. Animals don't poop. It's probably a mod conflict. When I drop back to 1.2 the mod works again and animals be poopin.

ChimMAG, Mar 8th at 6:11 AM

The droppings of birds and other animals differ significantly from each other in terms of their use in agriculture. This includes their nutrient content. Are there any plans to differentiate between them?
The second point is that at a certain stage, manure is warmer than the surrounding air, and this property is sometimes used in agriculture. However, too much manure can ‘burn’ plant roots. Are there any plans to add this mechanic? Well, plants in fertilised soil can withstand temperatures several degrees lower, but adding too much will damage the plants.

I completely updated the Russian translation, as it was incomplete.

QuantumRage, Mar 7th at 8:20 AM (modified Mar 8th at 5:03 AM)

i have created a mod that allows players to create custom burnable fules "briquettes" with dynamic burn rates and duratoins based on the input ingredients.

in real life people do make briquettes out of manure which is why i am reaching out to you to get your opinion and see what you would like to do for mod compat if any at all

i currently have 3 optoins for making our mods compatible

optoin 1
if you add a burnable property to your manure items my mod will simply detect it as a valid recipe ingredient and pull burn properties dynamically (my mod allready works with modded fuels)

this gives you full controll to adjust and update if needed, add new items while maintaining mod compatability with no extra effort on my side.

optoin 2
i can add a burnable porperty to your items when your mod is detected. this means "only if my mod and your mod are installed at the same time, your items will have burnable properties"

this option means i would need to maintain and update the burnable properties from within my own mod any time you update (which is less desirable)

optoin 3
i can adjust my deafult config file file, which will asign "sudo burn temp and duratoin" values. this would not make your items burnable in the traditional sense, but for the purpose of briquette making, it will become a valid ingredient.

people can allreayd do this themselves with my config. for mod packs it is not a big deal. but having some deafult values filled in, could be nice.

at any case, and at the very least, i would like to get your thoughts on burn time and duration for your items.

Drowsykitkat, Feb 25th at 8:00 PM

Can you add a feature to the dung to be able to throw it to prank my friends, it would be so funny.

Gingertea, Feb 24th at 8:52 PM

thanks for the tip Greenmind x)

Greenmind, Feb 24th at 5:34 PM

Gingertea I've been using it with no issues in 1.21.6

One thing I'd recommend is to place cobblestone down under your animals. I didn't initially and ended up digging up blocks which is annoying. If I knew more about mods I'd make a pitchfork tool that works like the scythe but for poo.

Gingertea, Feb 10th at 7:16 PM

1.21.6 ?

Jarlbalzrruff, Jan 8th at 9:50 PM

I love this mod, but i have an issue. It says its compatible with the FOTSA Bovinae mod yet my cattle have yet to poop. is it dependent on how much they eat? Because my pigs and ducks work, but not the cows

WitchKnight, Jan 4th at 12:56 AM

My question right now is: Do the droppings create entity markers on the minimap/world map when using the Mob Radar mod? Cuz that would be a bit annoying.

Jemy191, Dec 23rd 2025 at 5:36 PM

I would love to use this, but can't figure out how to mix grass with manure piles on the ground, or how to remove manure slurry from barrels. Could you please add a description for dummies, on how to do those things?

Nolia, Nov 7th 2025 at 1:43 AM (modified Nov 7th 2025 at 1:45 AM)

Could you please make this compatible with https://mods.vintagestory.at/saltpeterproduction

Great mod.

Freeflier, Oct 22nd 2025 at 12:41 AM

Is there any way you could add this to wild animals too? I was literally just thinking a mod like this would work perfectly with the Footsteps mod to introduce more immersive hunting. It would be especially useful if you could tell if it's fresh or old droppings.

It should be in the same folder as the other log files. It can also be in the "Archives" folder, if you have restarted the game after the crash happened. If you can't find it, it's ok.

how to find client-crash log? Because I don't see any, maybe because my client didn't crashed, it just kicked to main menu.

xXx_Ape_xXx , Oct 10th 2025 at 4:25 PM

KonradDark

Interesting.. sounds like some other mod might be interfering with the barrels, all this mod does is add three barrel recipes, and I've not seen this issue on the server I play on.

Please use the issue tracker located above the pictures, and post your client-main, client-debug and client-crash logs there, so I can see if there's anything that might come from this mod.

KonradDark, Oct 10th 2025 at 4:03 PM

Hey on one server I'm playing we have this mod it's fun to use but idk why but everytime I wanna close the barrel to make medium fertilizer it say it threw an exception on a server and kick me out of it, when I relog I can close the barrel normally... until I wanna close another barrel.
