This is a super simple mod to enable the unimplemented vanilla vinegar liquid, and allows it to be used for pickling vegetables and soybeans. Or you can drink it for a small amount of no nutrition satiety. It doesn't go bad.

Vinegar can be made in two ways. The slow way is that when wine, ale, cider, or mead perish, it'll turn into an equivalent amount of vinegar instead of rot, to simulate the natural growth of bacteria that happens in unsealed alcohol. This means you can start pickling without ever finding any salt! The fast way is to add a pickled vegetable to 25 litres of undistilled alcohol to turn it into vinegar in much less time, simulating transplanting a live bacteria culture into the alcohol instead of waiting for one to naturally form.

Pickling requires 1 litre per vegetable, but it only consumes 0.2 litres, so you can continue to reuse the vinegar for more pickles, similar to "backslop" in real life pickling and fermentation.

Mod Compatibility

Usable as a curdling and pickling agent in my Just Tofu mod.

Usable as a topping for stews and porridge in my Variations on a Meal - Revaried mod.

Make any compatibility requests below! It's easy to add to your own mod as well instead.

May interact poorly with any other mod that adds a way to make the vanilla vinegar item.

IRDP's Wet Crops crops can be pickled in vinegar and alcohol spoils into vinegar!

IRDP's Wet Crops claims their crops are compatible with your mod (pickling and making more vinegar). Figured I'd mention it cus it's nice to know. Thank you for the mod btw, I believe I just figured out how to easily make it compatible with Material Needs too. Will mention here if it works or anything comes of it.

If Wet Crops uses the vanilla vinegar for pickling, then it should be fully compatible! This mod doesn't add any new items, it just adds recipes for disabled vanilla ones.

Best vinegar implementation I've seen. Good job!

Thanks! I tried to make it more realistic (without adding any new items or mechanics so it's vanilla safe) than the other mods I'd seen, the "seal fruit in a barrel with water" thing they all seem to do isn't really how it's done irl.

I assume they just haven't decided how they want it to be acquired yet. Long term food preservation seems to be intentionally difficult to obtain with how rare salt is, and vinegar pickling kind of skips a lot of that since wine is easy to get. Hope you enjoy the mod!
