Just a small mod I whipped up after a conversation with my friends. Adds a dynamic heat radius to most heat sources, reflecting their intensity and temperature. I figured maybe someone else might want to use it too :)

Campfires and Forges will emit heat based on the fuels burned within them. Burning and hot ground storage (burning firewood, hot ingots) both emit heat in a radius around it proportionate to heat temperature.

This also gives torches and oil lamps a small body-temperature heating radius - but they only ever heat the player up to a max of 34° on their own... enough to keep from freezing to death, but still too cold to get rid of the frost.

As of 1.0.2, adds an ambient heating pass to the environment above 5°. Can be disabled.

Commands:
/iheat viz - Heat zone visualizer
/iheat scan [radius] - Scans in a radius and prints detected heat sources
/iheat melt - Heats the block you're looking at one step (melts one layer of snow at a time).

Config options:
"MeltSpeedMult": Raises the speed that snow and ice melt around heat sources.
"RadiusMult": Multiplies the heat emission radius size for each source.
"EmitterTickSeconds": The frequency that the snow melt system ticks.
"MeltGlacierIce": Whether the server allows melting of Glacier Ice with heat sources.
"HeatFromHotItems": Whether the server allows heat emission from hot ground storage items.
"GlacierMinTempC": Minimum temperature the server requires heat sources to be in order to melt Glacier Ice.
"WarmthCeilings": The mod adds a ceiling for Oil Lamps and Torches, so that they don't heat a player's body temp all the way. Initially on - disable if you want torches and oil lamps to act as normal warmth sources.
"HeldItemWarmth": Whether items (Oil Lamps and Torches) should warm the player when held.
"HeldItemMelting": Whether items (Oil Lamps and Torches) should melt snow when held.
"WeatherMelting": Whether the server allows ambient temperature melting.
"WeatherMeltMinTempC": Ambient melting's minimum temperature.
"WeatherMeltSpeedMult": Ambient melting speed multiplier
"WeatherMeltColumnsPerTick": How many chunk columns the ambient melt sweep examines each second. Default 12.
"WeatherMeltBlocksPerTick": Maximum number of blocks melted per sweep. Default 400.

  • Opened doors should no longer block heat
  • Weather thaw for Lake ice gets more aggressive during the summer months
  • Snow under leaves, roofs and overhangs should now thaw
  • Hot work items warm you
  • Hot work items melt snow, and can be thrown into snow to quench them and cool them down

v1.0.2 - Extreme Weathers compat and bug fixes

New - Extreme Weathers compat. They do snow and snowy plant variants and stuff differently than vanilla, so I added their snow blocks to a list of meltable snows (icicles and stuff melt too).
New - Ambient thaw. Above 5°, snow and (non-glacial) ice begin to melt globally - and they melt faster for every 5° higher.

Fixed a bug - snow on berry bushes and saplings never melted.
Fixed a bug - Waterlogged milfoils and stones and stuff were being overlooked.

New command - "/iheat melt" - forces 1 heat step at the block you're looking at. Admin only.

If this was compatable with immersive body temp it would be perfect! Still good though!

Is this compatible with Immersive Body Temperature?

Turist79, 4 days ago
@hexigrim: I don't believe so

Any plans to look into it?

Cain907, Aug 18th at 3:03 AM (modified Aug 18th at 3:06 AM)

The latest version seems to have an issue with stationary heat sources on my 1.22.5 dedicated server. New Brady’s oil braziers are detected at 1000°C with radius 6, and their rings appear with /iheat viz, but they barely melt snow or do nothing. /iheat melt works on the same snow, and held torches melt it normally. They seemed to work fine on version 1.0.2

The visualizer shows over 15,000 block sources with most deferred. Weather melting is disabled. It looks like stationary emitters may be getting stuck or starved by the queue.

After every server restart, the braziers melt a little snow and then stop completely. It looks like their stationary heat zones process once and then become stuck or marked as resting without waking again.

Love this Mod!

does this have any effect on crops in greenhouses? would be a neat feature if not

hexigrim , Aug 16th at 7:18 AM
@Pell: does this have any effect on crops in greenhouses? would be a neat feature if not

This mod by itself doesn't, no - greenhouse heat is actually a flat room bonus based on room conditions.

I do own another mod that I added compatibility for, that adds a steam radiator that adds a stacking, increasing warmth bonus to greenhouses (as long as they stay running), though that might not be what you're looking for.

oh nice, yeah thats sort of what im looking for, thanks! how would i patch the heat bonus mechanic for other mods? i already have pipes and power on my server and i would like to make a patch for the some of the blocks in that mod, such as the boilers and some of the pipes

ashleyuk789, Jul 30th at 2:04 PM

Its it possible to make this compatible with TassHardCorewinter?

seems to only melt layer snow but not deep snow

Dae_Blackheart, Jul 30th at 1:55 PM

literally erfect for the server im going to be hosting thank you so much. may i ask how you made held items warm you up? i was wondering since i wanted to make heat lamps from frost punk and saw the easiest way was to make them a piece of jewlry using C&N jewlry

hexigrim , Jul 30th at 2:36 PM
@Dae_Blackheart: also how would i go about patching other mods to work with this? such as heaters from electrical progressive or braziers from other mods

Thanks! I honestly was really suprised it hadn't been made already.

The easiest route for compat, if you'd like held item heating/melting, is a patch onto your item/block:

{ "name": "ImmersiveHeatSource", "properties": { "heatStrength": 5, "warmthCeilingC": 34 } }

That gets you both - held-item warming and snow-melting.

Temperature works out to heatStrength x 100, unless the block keeps a real one of its own like a firepit does.

heatStrength: For scale, 5 is what I give a torch, an oil lamp is 1, a charcoal pit is 6. Heating zone radius scales with heatStrength, with a floor of 2.5 blocks and a max of 10 blocks. heatStrength below about 0.5 produces no melt circle at all.

warmthCeilingC is the body temperature it stops helping at. I use 34 as a baseline so held sources are relatively balanced against placed sources.

If your block already has vanilla's HeatSource behaviour, take that one off - one or the other, not both.

If the heat source is placeable-only, the mod picks up anything with vanilla's HeatSource behavior, so you can just patch on:

{ "name": "HeatSource", "properties": { "heatStrength": 5 } }

Hope this helps!

I have a huge amount of snow around my base (from a mod Extreme Weather). It started melting around -5 degrees and flood everything around with water. It is actually cool (despite the fact, it should start with positive temperature), but im curious, will all this water disappears with time, or i messed up my world? =)

Snow melting from heat sources shouldn't generate any water - only Lake Ice and Glacier ice should melt into water. Can you clarify for me what you're seeing in game?

I haven't messed with any environmental temperatures either (like, the season temp) - only heat sources, like campfires and forges - so if your snow is melting naturally from the environment temperature, it's likely not from this mod.

It started immediately after i installed your mod (i doubt that vs roofing update did it). I will try to disable your mod and see, how it is going. In the visualizer, I didn't see any heat sources in those places.

Yeah I'm really not sure. My mod physically doesn't make snow blocks melt into water at all, or touch ambient melting temperatures at all. Snow layers are only coded to melt and evaporate into particles.

If Lake Ice is melting into water, that's a vanilla feature, although no clue why it would be happening with an ambient temperature of -5°and no heat source - that wouldn't be me.

If Glacer Ice is melting into water and you don't like that, you can disable Glacier Ice melting in the configs (pretty sure that's not what you've got going on though).

Heat sources additionally have block retention, so nothing heating the inside of your house should permeate outside of your house. This mod only touches heat sources, not external temperature, so I don't know what could be causing your issue.

After digging into it all night, I couldn't find out what your issue was - but I did figure out Extreme Weathers has a different snow system than Vanilla, so I added a small compatibility patch.

Additionally, I implemented environmental ambient heating over +5°C, and after testing in my worlds, I can safely say I watched a full blizzard occur, and then (timeskipped, and) watched all the snow melt - and no water was left behind.

Hopefully your issue is fixed, or hopefully you find whatever mod is causing it.

Do you have other water affecting mods, like realistic water?

Edit: Realistic water doesn't make water out of snow, either.

Will you still get warmed up if you're holding a torch/oil lamp in your hand?

@Willcario: Will you still get warmed up if you're holding a torch/oil lamp in your hand?

I haven't implemented that yet, but I was thinking about it.

I wasn't sure how that would feel balance-wise, but I could probably just make it config-disableable. Give me a few hours and I'll look into it :)

hexigrim , Jul 30th at 9:23 AM

Pushed an update! Torches and oil lamps heat you (to 34°) while held, and also melt snow while you walk :)

Sweet! Appreciate it. I understand it might not be the easiest thing to balance, but still, it always confused me how you could freeze to death while literally holding an open flame in your hand
