Latest release (for Vintage Story 1.22.0 - 1.22.2, potentially outdated):
handbookdeclutterer-2.0.1.zip 1-click install
Groups tons and tons of items and blocks into slideshow categories, reducing the amount of bloat in the handbook. This can be caused by a variety of things, the modder not including it to begin with, bad patches, typos in the definitions, and it's relatively easy to correct.
I'm also currently working on a bit of a campaign to incorporate many of these tweaks into the base mods, hopefully the supported list will shrink as more mods behave properly as a base.
Feel free to point out any mod that spams the handbook or things that I missed in the comments!

Credits
This mod is a spiritual successor to Dana's Fix Handbook Clutter, and wouldn't have been possible without it. It utilizes some files from it as a baseline vanilla patchset, but is primarily original patches.
Modders are welcome to incorporate any patches as changes in their mods with no attribution. A better user experience for everyone is always preferrable to me, but I would prefer some credit ;)

I'm getting those same bricklayer errors and also some errors about draconis harnesses being moved/removed or something. Looks like there's been some updates to the mod causing noise in the log if not actual issues. :)
Thank you for this though it's such a good mod!
Hi! I'm getting errors when I load both this mod and Bricklayers together. I have a clean install of VS and have been doing some trial and error for my new playthrough. edit: I'm noticing that when both are installed then an entry is being made for a light mudbrick slab with missing textures. Looking at the comments, somebody had a similar problem but Tels mentioned that they have removed them because it was built into the main game. So I'm wondering if that commenter also had this mod installed as well?
Thanks for the report, mod compat was just left "as is" for the version bump and I figured I woudl fix the issues that turned up as they manifested. I'll look in to how draconis changed.
This mod is an absolute gift for wrangling the handbook, thank you for it!
Noticing some compatibility errors popping up in the log during startup, I'm sure they are fine but just thought I'd pass them along, seem to be connected to Draconis compatibility

Now this. THIS is a godsend.
Thanks for the update ! I noticed theses errors in the logs while launching with the mod enabled :
3.5.2026 15:39:05 [Error] Patch 0 in handbookdeclutterer:patches/aaavanilla/survival-itemtypes-wearable-neck.json: File game:itemtypes/wearable/neck.json not found
I made a temporary fixed version of the mod: https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/51003
I was procrastinating it because it's a harmless noise error that just causes some things to not be grouped. Main version is updated now.
Thank you for the mod! <3
MikeZilla_ probably way late, but there's an included entry in the Quivers & Sheaths config file, that allows you natively in the mod to disable them. First line in the cfg.
Great mod, thank you actioninja
Absolutely still saved me now that I'm back and building a mod pack again 👍
Hello !
Thanks for the mod, it is really cool, especially for those like me who live opening the handbook every ten minutes :D
Would you consider adding Hanging Basket and its patch / Drunkling's Stoneware Jug?
Great mod, thank you for making this!
seconding the ChandelierCraft suggestion
thank you for making this!
actioninja - I'm not completely certain, but your fine work might be a universe of helpful with cleaning up ChandelierCraft entries?
Thank you, I understood what you wrote. I was just doing it thinking I needed bytype in the handbook and I got it to work correctly.
MikeZilla_ So the problem here is that that's just fundamentally the way the handbook works. All this mod does is affect the list of icons under things like the ingredient for and can be stored in list of icons. It doesn't hide or collapse the actual entries. I plan to eventually do something about this but atm I can't do anything with a pure content mod.
I would really appreciate support for Quivers & Sheaths, it's a tad excessive.
Eternal Seraphim Backpacks could aso do with the treatment, too.
Edit: Pastebin of modlist, just noticed your reply to Silentfox
Zsuatem done, latest verison has can jewelry support
manny59
I plan to eventually write this up formally, but the way byType works is kind of weird and unintuitive. Basically, when a list of items is to be displayed, it runs through the list and for each item it checks every other item for if their code matches its byType. Matching is determined by a standard wildcard match, which is what the star is for. You also can use {variant} templates, but this will actually split the groupings rather than keep them together because you can think of it as like if it were substituting the variant name in for the check.
ie, if you have an item for an amogus with code `amogus`, and the variants sus: [sus, nosus] and colors: [red, green, blue], if you wanted the sus and no sus variants to not group but then the colors to group you would do
groupBy: ["amogus-{sus}-*"]
This is possibly the single worst example to explain this, but you get the idea.
Hi I'm wondering if you can give some advice on a mod that I'm working on, I'm trying to use the "bytype" for the handbook and had no success. Do you know of a way to make it work?
Would it be possible to add support for CAN Jewelry?
Weird, I'll have to double check, thank you for the response.
MrShiloh
I've got a pretty fast workflow worked out where I can knock out a patch set in 10 minutes or so. It's really nothing, the initial work took a lot of fiddly time but now it's very fast to work on. This always was more of a knowledge problem than a work problem, it took me a few days of reading the source and experimenting with how this feature works exactly to figure out how to do this properly.
Silentfox
Ironically, now I gotta give a kind of bullshit "can't do that chief" excuse ;) I downloaded the latest version, 0.5.4, and it seems to properly group the different kinds of sheathes. Checking the source it also seems to have the attributes set correctly. I suspect that you have another mod that's got a bad patch that's overwriting the handbook attributes, are you playing on a server? If not, full modlist?
Would it be possible to add support for Maltiez's sheath mod? That one adds a ton of handbook entries.
PEAK author response time; no fuss, no excuses
"hey, [insert mod] has a lot of entries, can you do something about it?"
"yeah."
FatRefrigerator
You were not lying, that was a whole lot of variants. Support added in most recent version.
Are you able to add compatbility for: Snowshoes
It's the biggest offender in our current server, it has an entry for every possible color/variant/cloth/hide. It's like 8 rows of entries its nuts.
Dang that was fast thank you!
GarnetAnimations Done, uploading a new release now.
Can you by chance add patches for the three (Glass Traodiirs, Glass Doors, & Sliding Windows) mods made by MissesHex?
Im the creator of Sliding Wooden Shutters and More!. Sorry for the mess, will fix it in a futur patch!
actioninja
Ah, yes.. Well, nothing is perfect. On the bright side, now it won't be thousands of them all blinking at me, just simple a few hundred of them and less scrolling...
And again; A big THANK YOU for burning your own braincells on this!
DanaCraluminum HI GOAT !
1stSlug
Unfortunately, now you'll be drowning in even more flashing icons because the huge redundant walls are gone and replaced with flashing icons :P
Thank you so god damn much for taking up this guantlet! I can't tell you how opening the guidebook made me feel like I was drowning in flashing Icons and spam...
Thank. God. You are a god amongst mortals, thank you so damn much.
Finally someone overtook the most boring json-only task that I gave up continuing a long time ago
