Grinding Wheel Rework expands the vanilla grinding wheel to support more tools and turns sharpening into a lightweight repair system.

Sharpening no longer removes current durability; instead, each grind step restores 20 durability while permanently reducing the tool's maximum durability by 5.

  • so maximum durability is reduced by 25% of the repaired amount of durability, giving worn tools a way to stay useful a little longer at a long-term cost
  • tools with a max durability below 20 will get destroyed, so keep that in mind when trying to repair a gold scythe or something of low durability

The mod also adjusts buffs by tool role: mining tools can gain mining speed, combat tools keep their vanilla-style crit bonus, and utility tools can be repaired without receiving an extra combat buff.

A buff will last for 25% of the tool's max durability. The buff can be up to 10% (so a bonus of 10% mining speed is possible).

Keep in mind that not all tools can be repaired because grinding a hammer for example doesn't make any sense.

If you don't like the settings you can also edit the ModConfig file with the repair values that fit your individual needs.

In the modconfig file you should also be able to add modded weapons and tools, but you need to know their identifiers.

Also check out my other mods, like the one for sharpening arrows on a grinding wheel.

1.1.2 grindingwheelrework
1.22.0-pre.1 - 1.22.3

This update is really only needed, if you plan to use Quality Gears.

Completely redid the calculations of the max durability subtraction to make the mod more compatible with other mods that edit the max durability (especially compatibility with Quality Gears).

Due to the complete calculations rewrite it is possible that currently existing tools from versions before 1.1.2 might show weird durability / max durability. I tried to make it as compatible as possible with existing tools...

With new tools everything should work with no problems.

Imporant fix

Fixed a compatibility issue with xskills, where the maximum durability was not subtracted when repairing tools with a quality tag from the smithing skill tree. No more infinite repairing. ;)

1.22.0-pre.1 - 1.22.1

  • Changed max durability reduction to 25% (so repairing is not too overpowered with quenched and tempered tools)
  • Changed how sharpening buffs work on already sharpened tools. Prior to this update a tool with a rest buff of e.g. 20 usages will not be updated when sharpened again. Now the buff is again set to 25% of max durability, so updating the buff works.
  • Changed how the usages of the buff show.
  • Corrected the translations
  • Fixed a bug where the buff would decrease when sharpening. Now it stays at its usage counter.

Does this mod not work with the Armory mod? And is there any way to make them compatible?

DefactoToast, 5 days ago

anyone know it this is compatible with toolsmith?

Gariba, Jun 29th at 1:32 PM

Could you add a damage bonus to weapons too, along with or instead of the crit bonus?

Randompug, May 28th at 8:21 PM

Compatability with combat overhaul weapons?

Fritz_Xray, May 26th at 10:31 AM

Is this mod compatible with smithing+?

@Fritz_Xray: Is this mod compatible with smithing+?

I don't use smithing plus myself, but I would guess that it is compatible? Isn't smithing plus mostly for the smithing part of the game? This mod is for repairing a finished tool. If anyone wants to test it and report back, that would be nice.

I did test it, and it does work as it should, but running both mods at the same time isn't really worth it.
I was mostly concerned about the tool repair part from smithing+. Where when the tool brakes you get a broken tool head back, and can resmith it with metal bits of the same kind. At the cost of max durability.

It remembers the max dur from using the grinding wheel. And when you rapair it after braking, it calculates new max dur based on that value.
So for example if you grinded down a falx to 100 points and broke it. After repair it'll still have max dur at that sub 100 points.

Wait... why wouldn't the vanilla grindig gear work like this in the first place? 😭😭😭 Awesome mod! My immersion is saved. 🙏

would be possible to add compat for https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/51664

The only issue between the 2 mods is that once you use the Grinding Wheel, the upgrade gears do not increase the durability level of the weapon/tool anymore

I reworked the calculation of the max durability. It should now be compatible with Quality Gears. It is recommended to use the gears on a new tool, which was not yet used, because the Quality Gears mod it programmed that if a tool with a durability of 1000/1000 will become a 1200/1200, but a tool with a durability of 999/1000 will become a 999/1200 and not a 1199/1200. Therefore also if used on a repaired tool (even if it is repaired to lets say 850/850), the tool will only get a max durability increase with the gear and not a durability increase (leading to for example a 850/1020). The durability will then have to be repaired again, leading to a loss of max durability again (it will then increase to 870/1015 -> 890/1010 -> 910/1005 -> 930/1000 -> 950/995 -> 970/990 -> 985/985). So not optimal, but it at least they work together now. Also the mentioned behavior with the used tool is the QualityGears mod, not the repairing.

This mod is vary interesting, because one of the big things higher level tools allow you to do is save inventory space. One steel pickaxe has 2.5 the deribility of a iron one, so you save 1.5 inventory slots per steel pickaxe. Meaning your mining trips can last that much longer.

This mod allows you to repair tools, at the cost of that advantage. Every time you repair a tool you make it less useful.

And this is not counting the buff it gives. Is it worth reducing that advantage for some faster mining?

NateDoesLife, May 4th at 9:31 PM

Honestly how the vanilla grindwheel should work, personally believe the devs kinda flopped a bit with the quenching/tempering/grinding system (while still awesome they added it, I just wish it was more like how you have this overall).

Gariba, May 2nd at 3:38 PM

Hi! Could you add a config for how much max durability is reduced per repaired point?

Gariba, May 4th at 9:16 PM
@Omikronlex: I updated the mod and added a ModConfig.

Thank you! I see you added whitelists and blacklists too!

Yes, I thought maybe somebody wants to repair some tools that i forbid, or repair their modded tools too.

WalkTheSeas, Apr 23rd at 7:48 PM

Thank you for making the grinding wheel more useful. I may be wrong, but in Vanilla it can only be used on falxes right now, right? Seems disappointing.

Yes, I was also disappointed with only the falxes and also only giving them a buff with the grinding wheel... I thought it would make more sense to be able to repair tools. But I didn't want to make crafting new tools obsolete so not all tools can be sharpened/repaired and I implemented the 25% max durability degradation and made repairing a lengthy process (only repairing in 20 durability steps takes a while when repairing steel tools).
