Grassroots
a cannabis cultivation mod
"This is grade A, top-shelf, lightly-spritzed-with-holy-water cannabis."
Grow, dry, cure, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Grassroots adds cannabis cultivation for sativa and indica plants.
Hemp production allows hemp stalks to be broken down into fibers, which acts as a full crafting alternative to flax, linen, and cloth.
Four strains, each with their own climate requirements and effects when smoked. Find them growing wild in the world, or grow your own from seed.
The cultivation process has three optional steps that improve the quality of your final product and quality matters. A carefully tended harvest hits harder and lasts longer.
Wild Strains
Hindu Kush - Found in temperate forests and grasslands. Tolerates cold well. A reliable strain for most climates.
Red Congo - Found in hot, wet jungle and rainforest climates. Needs warmth and moisture to thrive.
Mazar-i-Sharif - Found in cold mountain regions and dry upland terrain. Thrives where other strains fail.
Acapulco Gold - Found in hot, arid desert and savanna regions with little rainfall.
Quality
There are four quality levels. Getting to Dank takes effort: nutrition during growth, drying, and curing. Skip steps and you'll still get something, just not the best.

Enjoying
Rolling and smoking a joint gives a short-duration buff. The effect depends on the strain. Potency scales with quality.
In-game HUD will display buffs and timer. CTRL+G to toggle HUD off/on.

Hemp Production
Cannabis crops can drop hemp stalks alongside their usual yield. Stalks can be broken down into fibers and follow the same production as flax (fibers -> twine -> linen -> cloth).
Hemp cloth can be dyed using the same barrel process as regular cloth/mordant cloth, and hemp fibers or twine can be soaked into pulp and pressed into writable hemp paper.
Hemp items are fully compatible with crafting recipes that call for flax fibers, twine, linen, or cloth, they work as direct substitutes. (there's a lot of recipes, things can get missed! let me know on discord!)
If Immersive Fibercraft is installed, stalks, fibers, and twine can be processed using the spinning wheel and flying shuttle loom instead of the crafting grid. (currently grid is still on with Immersive Fibercraft)
The quality system does not play into Hemp Production. New rope recipe!
**If you DO NOT want hemp production in your world and prefer flax to rule, make this change in the config:

Hemp Patch Any recipes in vanilla that use flax/linen/cloth should allow hemp variant to be used in its place. Mods that use those vanilla items should also patch and allow hemp. But any custom items, fabric, etc will not patch. If I missed a key in my mapping and a specific item causes issues, let me know.
Immersive Fibercraft compat for hemp production - hemp is still enabled in crafting grid, im debating on writing something to block recipes if IF is detected or see what can happen.
Toolsmith compat for hemp bindings from: hemp stalk, hemp twine, and hemp cloth-color strips (toolsmith fabric strips)
From Golden Combs compat waxed linen/twine can be made from hemp linen/twine and used in the frame liners. Bees enabled on GR plants.

Follow the mod troubleshooting guide from the moddb.
Clear you unpack folder in your Cache.
Delete your config file for grassroots.
If you get black textures, atlas is not mapping correctly. Usually a mod conflict, disable mods to find which mod has conflict.
Plants have worldgen so if you remove mod they will be unrendered if they are in already loaded chunks.
Multiplayer is only lightly tested. Smoke from joint is sent both client and server so that you and friends can see smoke, but the server side smoke amount may not be as much as the client.
Any mods that affect held items/smoke may have issues with the joints. Mods that do things with buffs might conflict.

Does the weed rot?
E.g. could I just use the mod to create Hemp Textiles as a flax alternative and just produce rot from the buds? 😀
Yes the buds do rot and you could just use the leaf and bud as a rot farm and focus on hemp if you wanted!
Remember the difference between strains with this simple heuristic: Indica is "inda couch", and Sativa is the other one!

i have a question ive loaded this up on a pre-existing map do i have to regenerate chunks to get any of the items to load as ive played for say 10 hour or so since adding and have not found any of the plants
Correct, you would need to explore chunks that have not been rendered yet/regen if it's added to a pre-existing world.
Does the quality modifier also affect the duration of the buff, or only the strength of the buff?
Currently no. It used to but the value change wasn't sticking. If you want to perma increase the duration, it can be changed in the config. I can see about applying quality duration again in a fix

Already loved this mod, adding hemp utility just made it a forever mod for me as long as its around.. Big ask, but cannabutter? or maybe just pipe crafting for those who dont like smoking paper Lmao! be amazing to see a pipeleaf colab in that regard..

Yo cool mod ya got here.
Any plans for "topping" or LST'd plants, taking clones, and crossing strains? (could be cool to compatibility patch with ruderalis for autoflowering hybrids). Even first generational hybrids or F1s between landraces can show improved vigour, yeild, potency, and plant size. Hybrids are more temperature tolerant aswell.

Pipeleaf would most likely need to extend some functions so GR buds could hook into pipes. Working on some other things for the mod atm, and thank you glad you enjoy it!
Right around when you posted this Pipeleaf pushed the 1.22 update. Not great logs so not sure what all got changed
This is such a cool thing to see. I'm a medical user (chronic migraine) and this fulfills my crazy disabled hippy in a commune fantasies in my favorite game! 💗🦈
Input from a fiber artist: hemp (chemical effect) and hemp (fiber) are not the same plant. The first are much smaller plants cultivated specifically to produce more chemical effect. The second ones are much taller and larger, resulting in better fiber production at the cost of chemical effect. There isn't a lot of real world double dipping in the hemp industry. You could get into some cool experimental botany and cultivation mechanics if you wanted to go crazy.
same plants different growing conditions, a good strain of marijuana should be able to get as big as a hemp plant, unless it is an autoflowering strain in which case certaintly way too small to do anything for fibers

I downloaded this mod to add to my singleplayer 1.22.2 world. The mods I currently am running is: AutoToolBar (SaltyWater), Block overlay (xel), Creature Footsteps (Aceolu), Falling Tree (SaltyWater), HUD Clock (sunnye,fubfubfub), Hydrate or Dietrate (Chronolegionnaire, TheInsanityGod), Real Smoke (XyrVexus), Trash Binned (SaltyWater), Immersive Body Temp (Cer0). The cannabis leaves do add a slight psychedelic affect, the plants grow fine, the only thing that seems to not be working is the intended effects of the joints. I get no screen effects or buffs/debuffs after fully smoking one. I disabled all mods besides this one and tried a fresh world and it still does not work (I also get errors on start up for this mod). I do not know if this is user error or if the mod is simply not working as intended currently. I would really like for this mod to work for my singleplayer world as it is very well made and really cool to mess around with. Thank you in advance!
Hello, there is a discord thread for the mod if you would like to attach your server-main.log or client-main.log for any errors
There can always be issues with lingering data from your cache/unpack folder, you can try deleting that. Otherwise, no mods fresh world should produce smoke with the joint, there is no other visuals for joints other than smoke.
A buff rework is actually next. And it can be difficult to "know" if a buff is applied if you cant directly see the stat, so this comment had me thinking having a visual displaying active buffs would be beneficial - working on it https://imgur.com/a/T8gPCeR
Ah I was under the impression that the joints would add a slight psychedelic effect, I believe the mod is working then as every other aspect of the mod is perfect. Thank you so much for the reply!
Really enjoying the mod so far, but I would love a few small tweaks!
First up, the display of the Drying Racks and Jars - It would be awesome to actually see each bud we hang up, one at a time, and be able to mix them on a rack. (3 red, 2 green, 1 blue, for instance!)
Also, the display model for the Jar, it always looks full when placed? It also doesn't change color depending on the buds inside, hopefully this will change soon! It'd be great to have it look more full as you cram in buds and have the jar actually show the correct buds when filling! In addition, it'd be really nice to be able to place most, if not all, the items from this mod on the floor. For display or whatever, it'd be dope to lay the buds out in a cabinet.
If you need any help with texture work, don't hesitate to reach out!
Lastly, I would love to be able to break down the leaves we get into "Flax Fibers". This would, more or less, let us make "hemp" rolling papers (and clothes) without you having to bog down the mod by making Hemp Fibers it's own thing.

For the drying racks - we may revisit this, the amt of buds could be fun to see
Hemp - possibly, thinking of how much we want to put into it since it wasn't the original focus but there are many requests for it
That's why I think just making the leaves we already get, break down into Flax Fibers, would be the easiest option to make that feature! Hope you consider it!

As a beginner in 3d modelling, it's very inspiring to see such "simple", but at the same time amazing models and textures! I know making vanilla-looking VS style models can sometimes be harder than fully realistic ones. Thank you!
Also no, it's not a mod! In one of the latest votv updates dev added one pack of "thingy" seeds in a secret location, you can grow it and even roll and smoke a joint, haha! Though i don't think there are any special effects yet, but still fun to turn a serious scientific compound into a cannabis farm with purple lights and funky music playing everywhere. :D

There might be an issue with DryingSpeedOverhaul, I think you use the same name for the drying rack..
When I deconstruct the rack from DSO it will give me a GR rack back.

Nice mod! Would you ever add compatibility to Pipeleaf? (assuming it gets updated). Specifically for smoking in the pipes
A half-baked idea I have is using Genelib to give the plants genetics, possibly with interbreeding to create unique strains? You could have the option of a) cloning your current plant to keep its exact genetics/strain, or crossbreeding it with another to create something new.
For Pipeleaf yes I plan on patching for it, just waiting for it to update.
