A vanilla-friendly geology mod, part of a group of two geology mods (Geology Expansion: World and Geology Expansion: Works) meant to go together.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Designed to be able to be added mid-save and currently should be stable (but still remember to make backups)

  • Not recommended to remove from an existing save (any modded items/blocks anywhere in the world will be replaced with ? blocks)

  • HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and DESIGNED to be used alongside Geology Expansion: World. Without that mod, a lot of features will be unavailable

  • Some features require Expanded Matter to work

COMPATIBLE WITH:

MAIN FEATURES

  • More halite (salt) uses

    • Salt lamps

      • In-game: Using an oil lamp and some salt rocks, create a nice-looking salt lamp that has a pink glow, very nice for a house!
      • Real life reasoning: In the real world, lightbulbs are commonly drilled into salt rocks carved into nice shapes. Although Vintage Story doesn't have lightbulbs, one of the next best things are oil lamps.
    • Saline bandages

      • In-game: Soak poultices or bandages in brine (aka very salty water) to create saline bandages, with a small health boost compared to regular bandages.
      • Real life reasoning: Do NOT use brine for real life bandages, it is dangerous and the only reason this mod uses it is for simplification. Real saline bandages have an amount of salt matching the amount of salt we have in our blood, which heals the wound faster, and it also helps remove bad bacteria and dirt from the wound.
    • Salt as seasoning in foods

      • In-game: Add salt when cooking vegetable stew, soup, scrambled eggs, porridge, or meaty stew to add an extra 50 satiety (but no nutrition).
      • Real life reasoning: Uhhh ain't it kinda obvious? What else do you season your food with bro?
  • Marble trading

    • In-game: Sell blocks of marble to luxury traders for some moneyyy, but the marble blocks have to be carved out (use this helpful tutorial if you don't know how) and try not to damage the block, if the marble block is cracked it's worth less. Some colors of marble are worth more than others. You can also buy polished marble and marble tabletops from luxury traders.
    • Real life reasoning: Marble is a very luxury and popular choice for building, and special types of marble like Carrara Marble is mined in large quarries like in Tuscany, Italy.
  • Turning polymetallic nodules (from GE: World) into ore nuggets

    • In-game: After pulverizing some polymetallic nodules, load the crushed polymetallic nodules into bloomeries with fuel to get some ore nuggets. The ore nugget you get depends on what mineral that nodule was rich in, so if the polymetallic nodule says manganese-rich, you'll get manganese, if it says iron-rich, you'll get iron, etc.
    • Real life reasoning: Polymetallic nodules contain valuable stuff that can be extracted through crushing and smelting. Using a bloomery is a simplified version for gameplay though.
  • Making potash in a pot

    • In-game: 10L water per 5 charcoal in a barrel for 24 hours = lye. Cooking 10L lye in a pot = 2 potash. It's inefficient on purpose to not discourage getting potash from salt pillars, but it's an extra way to get some sweet sweet potash😎
    • Real life reasoning: Water dissolves potash from wood ash, and boiling away the water leaves the potash behind. Charcoal doesn't really work IRL for making potash this way but this game does not have wood ash so charcoal is used as a substitute.

MINOR FEATURES

  • Converting dirt to clay

    • In-game: Soak 8 dirt per 10L of water for 16 hours to make red clay! The worse fertility the dirt, the more clay it gives. But the catch is that it doesn't give much clay, to avoid the problem where players never seek out clay deposits.
    • Real life reasoning: Mixing dirt with water lets sand and other junk settle while clay stays floating, allowing the clay to be separated out. The more barren the soil, the more the clay within it packs tightly together and isn't loosened by plant roots.
  • Smashing sulfur and halite crystals (from GE: World) into pieces

    • In-game: In the crafting grid, combine a hammer with sulfur or halite crystals to smash it into pieces. The larger the crystal, the more material you get out of it.
    • Real life reasoning: Object + smash = object splits into pieces, pretty obvious
  • Trading sapphire and ruby (from GE: World) to luxury and artisan traders

    • In-game: Make some bank by selling rubies and sapphires after mining them, higher potential = more money, and rubies are worth
    • Real life reasoning: Rubies and sapphires are very high value when it comes to jewelry, especially the bigger, brighter, and more beautiful they are.
  • Using crushed sandstone (requires Expanded Matter to work) instead of quartz for refractory bricks

    • In-game: Crushed sandstone from Expanded Matter can be used as a substitute for quartz when making refractory bricks (for steelmaking, beehive kilns, and other brick-related stuff).
    • Real life reasoning: A lot of sandstone is made of almost entirely quartz, meaning it can be used instead of quartz for real life refractory bricks.

ROADMAP (subject to change)

  • Even more halite uses

  • Extra sulfur uses

  • Sapphire and ruby jewelry
