Original Mod: Darce's Drifters

Hate getting one-shotted by those tiny drifters because their coats are slighty different colors? This mod fixes that!

Darce's Drifter's Redone is a rework of Darce's Drifters, completely overhauling the original models, as well as many unique animations including completely new ones for compatibility with Gerste's Cats

Special thanks to Darce for giving me permission to upload this mod and its original models, and to Tenth Architect for getting me into VSMC and hopefully using this as a jumping off point for future projects.

Features:

    • Overhauls the appearance of all Drifters, making them more distinct and recognizable in combat. Hitboxes are accordingly scaled.
    • Retains Combat Overhaul compatiblity patch from the original mod. (Please report any issues or oddities, as I don't play with Combat Overhaul myself)
    • Tweaks of Darce's animations for added detail, such as a noticable wobble and swing to the double-headed drifter's heads, and some other minor details to others.
    • New and unique worship animations for Gerste's Cats fitting the appearance of each drifter.
    • Texture changes: Texture anomalies have been patched, and color palletes have been switched closer to shivers and bowtorns. More naturally rusty with more dirty colors. Additionally, drifters now have hanging skin from their head and abdomen.

What's New:

1.2.4 (For 1.21) and 1.2.4-pre. 1 (For 1.20):

    • Many visual tweaks and additions. Larger drifters should appear less stubby, more spikes, spines, and blades.
    • Corrupt and Double-headed drifter hitboxes have been readjusted to enter one-block spaces.

1.2.3 (For 1.21+):

    • Hitbox fix! Crawling drifter hitboxes are now more appropriate, so they should be less annoying to fight. (1.21 only)

1.2.0:

    • Hanging flax skin from the head and abdomen of all drifters, similar to shivers/bowtorns.
    • Surface drifter variants are now given shiver inspired color schemes (Vanilla grey tone, sickly skin tone, and dark rotten tone).
    • More metal spikes and spines for aesthetic synergy with shiver/bowtorns. Deep drifters are closer to recent concept art. Spines are returned to the nightmare difters.

1.1.1:

    • New chomp attack animation for the double headed drifter. (Combat Overhaul)

1.1.0:

    • Altered textures to better match the color pallete of shivers and bowtorns. Less saturated, more natural, dirty and "colorful".
    • Visual rework of the tainted and double-headed drifter. The tainted drifter has a bludgeon hand that swings back and forth, and the double headed drifter is a bit more menacing now.
    • Some UV fixes and alternate textures for deep and tainted drifters.

Vwert That shouldn't cause any problems but I fixed it just in case

Vwert, Mar 12th at 6:07 PM

Im getting errors saying [Warning] [Overhaul lib] [HarmonyPatches] (game:drifter-tainted) Listed colliders that were not found in shape: R lower arm, and i think this might be causing it, im on 1.21.6 btw.

Xozkov , Jan 22nd at 3:58 AM

boliveto tbh I never noticed an issue with balancing before but if you can make a case for it, I might consider it. I will have to see if it conflicts with rebalance mods like Temporals Reformed or Combat Overhaul (I dont use these but I know people like to combine them)

boliveto, Jan 21st at 8:57 PM

Do you know if it changes the range of the drifters? I tested around a bit, didn't felt like so, I found the big drifters to be kinda easy to just bully around, as they don't fit through gaps and derp around the terrain more, as they are chunky bois

LumpyAcidFish, Jan 20th at 10:53 PM

@xozkov I found out that it was wilderlands rustbound

Xozkov , Jan 20th at 11:26 AM

LumpyAcidFish What other mods do you have that you think affect drifters? Could be a conflict with hitboxes or something else like temporals reformed

Siegfried_Brehl Try the entities configuration mod

LumpyAcidFish, Jan 20th at 3:53 AM

is this mod preventing me from harvesting drifters?

in my modpack I cannot harvest them anymore

Siegfried_Brehl, Jan 13th at 2:50 AM

Is there a way I can increase the spawn rate?

Xozkov , Dec 18th 2025 at 4:52 PM

Venator_ You may be underestimating just how annoying it can be with disproportionate hitboxes. If Tyron updates the moddb to let us make alternate downloads, then I may. For now you can just mess with the modinfo.json and remove the hitbox changes from drifter.json

Venator_, Dec 16th 2025 at 8:38 PM

it would be nice to have a client side mod of this thats just new models for the enemies. so same vanilla gameplay but the drifters have the bigger models, even if the hitboxes are janky or weird I just want this to work on public mp servers that DONT have the mod installed. Any thoughts?

Farbott, Dec 13th 2025 at 9:50 PM

yoo awesome, hope to see it soon :^)

NikoNeeko, Dec 9th 2025 at 6:37 PM

Does this mod work well with combat overhaul and other stuff like that? and the temporals reformed mod?

reading the comments it looks like everyone is having issues getting it to work?

Xozkov , Dec 6th 2025 at 11:50 PM

Farbott I haven't thought about that. I have free time soon so mayble ill try something or ask to borrow the animations from that Drifter death reanimation mod

Farbott, Dec 6th 2025 at 4:01 AM

It'd be awesome if the drifters eventually had their deaths well, tweaked
the default 'kneel' pose always felt goofy to me

OkayRelax, Dec 3rd 2025 at 5:06 AM

Xozkov no mob changing mods except adding more like feverstonewilds.. doesnt seem to work in singleplayer either, no visual overhaul mods either except one that changes weapons.

Xozkov , Nov 28th 2025 at 2:14 AM

OkayRelax do you have an mods that tweak enemies? rebalance mods or visual overhaul mods?

OkayRelax, Nov 27th 2025 at 6:51 PM

Xozkov yeah that didnt work.. must be a mod conflict, any ideas what it could be? id figure it out myself but there doesnt seem to be any errors relating to it

Xozkov , Nov 27th 2025 at 3:23 PM

OkayRelax I uploaded a test version. If that doesn't work then it's probably a mod conflict

OkayRelax, Nov 27th 2025 at 10:24 AM

me and my friend are trying to use this mod on our server, uploads to our server fine, but it doesnt function, game plays as if the mod is not in ther servers mods folder *shrug*

Yeeh, Nov 19th 2025 at 10:49 PM (modified Nov 19th 2025 at 11:04 PM)

Sadly no dice.. When I do that, it extracts into a new folder and then it resumes with not letting me put the original zip file into the mods folder...

Edit: NEVERMIND I MANAGED TO GET INTO THE FOLDER! Will let you know if the mod functions, thanks for the advice <3
Edit 2: The mod is fully functional :) tho the apostrophe thing might be a good idea, none of the other mods I have installed have one, so you might be onto something.

Xozkov , Nov 19th 2025 at 10:41 PM (modified Nov 19th 2025 at 10:49 PM)

Yeeh damn. Well someone did manage to fix it a few months ago, because they told me this:

"When I put the .zip folder with the mod into another .zip folder, it was possible to upload the file to the server. After uploading, I extracted the .zip folder with the .zip folder with the mod in the server files and everything works fine"

Try this maybe? EDIT: It could be an issue with the .zip folder name itself, remove all spaces and the apostrophe from the name and see. If that works, i'll update the mod

Yeeh, Nov 19th 2025 at 9:38 PM (modified Nov 19th 2025 at 9:41 PM)

Nothing has changed sadly :( this is the only mod that has ever given me this problem which sucks...

Xozkov , Nov 19th 2025 at 9:12 PM

Yeeh MetallicGal I updated the modinfo.json to match the new standard so it might be fixed now, but I can't know for sure. Let me know if it works for yall

Yeeh, Nov 19th 2025 at 5:59 PM

I am also getting server issues when trying to upload the mod into the mods folder, it just refuses to upload. It actually did the same back in 1.20 and still does it now, though it may have something to do with using a third-party server hoster (I use HostHavoc), are the other guys also using a third-party host service?

Xozkov , Nov 19th 2025 at 5:08 AM

MetallicGal so far you're the second person to mention server issues. can you send some more details here or over the discord? the mod is required over server so I don't know what's causing the issue

MetallicGal, Nov 18th 2025 at 9:06 PM

my server wont let me upload it. it fails

ZeroAresIV, Nov 18th 2025 at 4:42 AM

Would be nice if the bigger and stronger drifters took less knockback, so they would feel like they have more weight to them

AuthorOfSin, Nov 8th 2025 at 8:55 PM

This mod deserves all the praise. I just installed it on my server and we happened to have a storm right after and the attention to detail in the animations and sizing of the drifters is just fantastic. All the love <3

Xozkov , Nov 1st 2025 at 7:48 PM

bintoss should be fixed now

Thank you guys for enjoying the mod!

bintoss, Oct 27th 2025 at 7:39 AM

It probably doesnt matter (other mods work as expected despite supposed missing textures), but...

Beedy, Oct 25th 2025 at 12:32 PM

This looks way better than Vanilla. Now, danger is better visualized! Thanks.

Narg, Oct 20th 2025 at 7:13 PM

hey Xozkov, minor thing, but getting a  missing texture warning for drifter/tainted2, shape file drifter/spiked1

ChiefKrogan, Oct 16th 2025 at 7:17 AM

Xozkov oh! Man I lumped all monster enemies as "drifter-type" in my brain and confused myself in pure pokemon fashion. Thanks for claryfying!

Xozkov , Oct 16th 2025 at 6:12 AM

ChiefKrogan the mod doesn't touch shivers, it just makes drifters look more like them and bowtorns

ChiefKrogan, Oct 15th 2025 at 5:34 PM

Is this compatible with Shiver Tweaks? Because this looks amazing but I also love the shivers running up walls to chase me, gives it reall horror-y vibes. I was wondering if those two would clash considering the new animations and models added here.

Paeddy, Sep 27th 2025 at 11:14 AM

Your mod is great I love it, thank you so much. :)

Xozkov , Sep 24th 2025 at 6:15 AM (modified Sep 24th 2025 at 6:33 AM)

Yarro I don't play with combat overhaul so I can't know for sure. It's specifically Maltiez's weapons? Click my discord thread link next to the files tab, and you can send specifics there. There may have been a change to combat overhaul that null'd the patch (edit: I tested it myself and it's working just fine on my end. Did you recently install combat overhaul? There could be an installation error, like maybe you didn't clear the mod cache or restart after downloading it.)

MooFah Yes, its safe to install/uninstall at any time

Yarro, Sep 24th 2025 at 1:40 AM

Hi, I have version 1.2.4 with Combat Overhaul on a 1.21 server and I've noticed that some of the CO weapons don't register hits on Drifters that vanilla weapons hit. I suspect it's this mod, let me know if there's anything I can send you here or on discord to help out!

MooFah, Sep 23rd 2025 at 7:40 AM

can you add this to an existing server?

maneater_buddha, Sep 19th 2025 at 9:20 PM

so good i literally forgot i had it installed and thought those are vanilla drifters.

Venator_, Sep 17th 2025 at 3:31 AM

this is how they should look in the official game

Gortomo, Sep 10th 2025 at 12:01 AM (modified Sep 10th 2025 at 12:02 AM)

Xozkov No worries.  Saw it and figured I would toss you a heads up, just in case.  All good and thanks again for the keeping the mod going!

Xozkov , Sep 9th 2025 at 10:24 PM

Gortomo Those are leftovers from where I import textures and stuff, I forgot it was there tbh I didn't know it showed up in the logs. As for the missing attachment point thing, I genuinely have no idea what's causing that issue

Gortomo, Sep 9th 2025 at 8:30 PM (modified Sep 9th 2025 at 8:32 PM)

Saw this in the log as I was looking for something else and thought you might be interested.  Referencing a onedrive location that doesn't exist, probably needs to be pointed to something in the mod.  Cheers.

Kenneth1109, Sep 7th 2025 at 3:18 PM

Xozkov The 'Brooder' idea sounds amazing! I will say that while yes you can make exploding enemies as ive seen from a few other mods they kinda suck to fight against and dont add much to the game except for the ocasional jumpscare. Amazing work though!

Xozkov , Sep 1st 2025 at 3:30 PM

Kenneth1109 I've had some ideas for original lore-friendly rust creatures, but that might be far off until I fully understand how to create entities. One idea I had was a 'Brooder' which is a essentially a walking locust nest, with locusts crawling inside the brooder's enlarged ribcage. There's also the 'Scrapnel' which is the generic exploding enemy that I'm not sure is possible to make in VS, and some other traditional enemy archetypes

Kenneth1109, Sep 1st 2025 at 1:57 PM

Amazing redesing! I've been missing this mod, the rustmonsters dont feel the same without it! 10/10 Bowtorn in a dark corner!

Will there be plans to add more enemy types in the future beside the Drifter, Shiver, Bowtorn, Loacust, and Bell? There arent many mods that add their own enemy types (rustbound isnt my cup of tea with the nests and all) beside the fantasy creatures mod, and I prefer rust based enemies.

Xozkov , Aug 31st 2025 at 8:51 PM

webp_Inept I've been in the planning stage for a possible shivers/bowtorns redone. My only hurdle is trying to come up with unique and fitting designs for each enemy

webp_Inept, Aug 31st 2025 at 5:00 PM

This mod is great it would be so much cooler if it did somthing similar for shivers and bowtorn

ZhoMysh, Aug 26th 2025 at 6:12 PM (modified Aug 26th 2025 at 6:14 PM)
MrApothic, Aug 25th 2025 at 9:57 PM

Are you by chance also improving the behavor of the drifters? Cause the vanilla experience of the drifters are very bland and I hope to see a possible overhaul of their logic.

Xozkov , Aug 21st 2025 at 1:03 AM

PenisMan Actually Darce is reworking Rust and Rot with crazy new drifters and such. If you're in the discord then look for the rust and rot thread to see progress

PenisMan, Aug 20th 2025 at 8:08 PM

Since you worked on Darce's Drifters mod Are you planning on redoing Rust and Rot as well?

It's never been updated in nearly a year and it has a bug where killing a Miasma's flies causes the game to instantly crash.

Blackguards seemingly hit way too hard and the run at a FULL SPRINT despite being in full Blackguard armor and rotting away for god knows how many years?

Xozkov , Aug 18th 2025 at 2:52 AM

Roggle Rustbound's description says "Mods that try to patch drifters should not crash the game, but won't do anything since vanilla drifters are disabled." which means it technically works, but they won't spawn. Reenabling their spawns will make them coexist but they might not interact with the rest of the enemies from the mod without a seperate patch. You could do that, but rustbound has its own artstyle that might not fit with these designs

Roggle, Aug 17th 2025 at 10:04 PM

Is this compatible with Wilderlands Rustbound? That mod says it should disable all other drifters for stability, but also it lists compatibility with another mod by Darce.

I hope so, these models look very well done.

El_Neuman, Aug 16th 2025 at 12:15 PM

This mod should be part of the game rather than just a mod. I hope the developers use it in a future game update 10/10

TheRealFlynn, Aug 12th 2025 at 9:09 PM (modified Aug 12th 2025 at 9:18 PM)

ahh, i did add it at the same time. my bad. I do love the reskins though!

Xozkov , Aug 12th 2025 at 8:28 PM

Madalovin I would like to but the problem with that is the changed hitboxes. Theoretically it would either cause terribe desync or not work at all. If I rescaled them to use vanilla drifter hitboxes then it kinda defeats the purpose of the mod lol

TheRealFlynn haha I think you're mistaken. The mod does not change sounds so you might be thinking of the Temporal Symphony mod but im glad you're enjoying it!

TheRealFlynn, Aug 11th 2025 at 9:49 PM (modified Aug 11th 2025 at 9:49 PM)

the sounds alone are worth it. Still new to the mod but it's fantastic and should be vanilla :) Drifters sound like their trying to rev up an internal engine. Super great addition to my playthrough. :)

Madalovin, Aug 11th 2025 at 6:45 AM

Is there a variant of this where I can have the cosmetics as a client-side mod? I love the work you've done with it but I'd like a means of playing with it without having the owner have it. c:

NotSoRants, Jul 19th 2025 at 12:35 PM

Xozkov I do have one that changes their grunting sound but I tried disabling it but that also didnt change anything, and no im on 1.20.12. Maybe im just doing something wrong

Xozkov , Jul 18th 2025 at 7:07 AM

NotSoRants It could be a conflict with a mod that changes drifters in some way. Do you know which? Or are you on 1.21 pre-3?

NotSoRants, Jul 16th 2025 at 11:54 AM

I am finding that this does not change anything, drifters still look the exact same, is there anything that could be causing this?

Xozkov , Jul 12th 2025 at 7:38 PM

Leoepard I'm not sure but I assume it does. The mod is simple and safe to install/uninstall at any time

Leoepard, Jul 12th 2025 at 4:02 AM

This might be a dumb but does this mod work on 1.20.07?

Just want to make sure before I add it to my 250 hour world this mod look amazing.

Xozkov , Jun 22nd 2025 at 6:55 AM

merryclefairy I'm aware of it, it was an issue with the original mod, but it has never caused any trouble i'm aware of so I never bothered to investigate it. I'll check to see what exactly is causing it

merryclefairy, Jun 22nd 2025 at 1:27 AM

hello, i noticed this happening in console log just briefly so there may be other creatures affected:

21.6.2025 20:24:32 [Client Warning] Entity game:drifter-deep with shape darcesdrifters:entity/land/drifter/deep seems to be missing attachment point center but also has the FloatUpWhenStuck behavior - it might not work correctly with the center point lacking

21.6.2025 20:23:35 [Client Warning] Entity game:drifter-tainted with shape darcesdrifters:entity/land/drifter/spiked1 seems to be missing attachment point center but also has the FloatUpWhenStuck behavior - it might not work correctly with the center point lacking

Xozkov , Jun 20th 2025 at 5:55 PM

General_JOE I keep forgetting about combat overhaul lmao. Will be a quick fix, expect the update in like one minute

General_JOE, Jun 20th 2025 at 5:23 AM

I think that the new surface drifters are also lacking animations in combat overhaul haha

LunaGore, Jun 12th 2025 at 5:09 PM

I catch myself shouting "Ayo what the fuck!" a lot, thanks :)

Xozkov , Jun 12th 2025 at 7:04 AM

General_JOE Got it! Original mod didn't have the combat overhaul StandAttackSlash and StandAttackPunch. I added both, and gave the double headed drifter a chomp attack animation for attackSlash.

General_JOE, Jun 11th 2025 at 10:35 PM

Testing with the new update rn and it seems like the attack animations (except rock throwing) for the corrupted and double headed drifters are not working. They just kinda stand there and hit you magically lol

Playing with combat overhaul, just to be clear

Xozkov , Jun 11th 2025 at 2:54 PM

Toothbrush Do you have any more info? That seems strange but maybe there's an error somewhere

Toothbrush, Jun 10th 2025 at 12:54 PM

Works on a solo world but makes game crash if on server.

Mokkel I'll check, but my partner and I just got off our world a few hours ago and it was working just fine. Can you tell me what mods you have? It's possible one of them might have some sort of conflicting patch that isn't on their mod page (edit: I can confirm it works on my end. Send me a client or server log if you can)

MarsTrimis I haven't heard of that one but if it only affects sounds, then it def should be. This mod only touches textures/shapes/hitboxes (edit: can confirm it works!)

JessBonklet Thank you!!

I can't seem to get this to work for 1.20.12 - not using any other mods that would affect drifters:)

is this compitble with scarier drifter sounds?
