An update of this mod by DisVern, for VS 1.22.X.
I loved this mod because it makes the early game slightly more forgiving when getting into metals, and it is actually possible in real life to hammer copper into shapes you want, the metal is soft enough to work with. The trade off is that you must still smelt the nuggets into ingots first. The learning and resource curve for metal upgrading is smoother as a result.
1.1 - Copper Plate Uniformity: now includes copper plate cold forging, which means you can take your ingots, flatten them with a helve hammer, and use those plates for making other things. Useful for mass production of hoppers and chutes!
1.2 - Lead, Moly, and Tin Uniformity: fixes tin plates to be cold-forgable alongside the vanilla ingots, and makes lead and the lead+copper alloy molybdochalkos also cold-forgable.
Future: I intend to maintain this mod until either DisVern or Foxy want to take it back. Let me know if there are any base game copper things you would like to make cold-forgable (that can be forged already and just need a lower melting point, please. I want to keep this mod basic and purpose-focused. Thanks!)

I really like to be able to work some metal cold as you can irl.
But I think that the purpose of tin is to be more resistant and less maleable than copper, making tin tools more durable and efficiant.
Plus brass is another copper based alloy that can be shaped when cold and might be a better candidate for cold-forging.
tin on its own is super malliable. Tin BRONZE is very hard and brittle by comparison, since the tin crystals slip between the copper crystal structure gaps and lock it in place, making them both stiffer as a result
Yes, I mistook tin for bronze, sorry about that.
But what about brass then? Do you think it should be cold-forged?
Ironically, Brass is best worked cold IRL, as heating it makes it MORE brittle
Gold and silver should be cold-forgeable too - gold is after all famously malleable, and speaking from my minor RL experience making jewelry, silver and copper have similar enough properties when it comes to shaping them that a teenager learning to work with them in high school art classes doesn't need to be taught any different techniques for working with one versus the other.
Ignore this comment if gold and silver already behave this way in the base game; I don't play alone and I've let my spouse be in charge of the smithy while I busy myself with tanning and weaving so I don't know much about the metalworking mechanics!
Those metals don't behave that way currently. I'm noticing references say that "[the metals] work-harden, that is, the crystal structure gets stressed and the metal becomes stiffer and more brittle" and require you to reheat to avoid breaking. As a result, I will allow cold-forging for ingots but not plates.
by this logic, copper plates should be off the table, since copper is infamous for work hardening-
is it possible to make copper bits cold-forgeable? i have a different mod that implements this and lets me smith copper bars cold, but i can't add bits to it when doing things like repairing my toolheads
Hmm, which mod is it that lets you repair your toolheads? Because that's not a vanilla feature as far as I know, if I'm mistaken definitely let me know. I could look into it but if that is a mod then it might be more appropriate for that mod to make the fix.
They're refering to Smithing+
The mod in question is technically SmithingPlus, but it also exists in Toolsmith. SmithingPlus makes it so when a tool breaks, it turns into the smithing item for the respective toolhead (so a scythe breaking would result in a partially-smithed scythe toolhead, with a couple voxels either missing or deformed). But smithing those cold works just fine - the thing I am unable to do is add metal nuggets to this partially smithed toolhead, since the nuggets themselves demand to be hot first.
Gotcha. I will try and contact the mod author of Smithing Plus, because I took a look and tried making a patch, but can't seem to get it to work in-game. I think they add or reuse some attributes I can't find. I'll try again when I have more time as well.
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't make sense to be able to attach cold metal to cold metal though..? Working with it, breaking bits off? Yep, sure. But you need heat to fuse it together surely..?
i'm aware it's not really a realistic request, but it would be convenient nonetheless. though honestly, i wish i could have a scholar's crucible, i believe it's called, for forging glassware on a desk with a candle and the user's air control - something to heat incredibly small amounts of metal or glass very quickly. IRL, the crucible has a forged copper outlet that is shaped to take advantage of the properties of air to speed it up and thin it out into a big long fan, i would be willing to forge it, the tube, even the manifold alongside the ceramic parts, i just hate wasting entire logs on fuel. note that i'm not asking this mod to be about this, but i'd love if it was the case - especially if they ever add proper glassblowing mechanics.
I have made an update that makes lead and the copper+lead alloy, molybdochalkos, cold-forgable. Also, I discovered that tin in the base game is already allowed to be cold-forgable, but only for the ingots, so I have shared the patch for plates and work items to tin for uniformity. It is all optional in the assets folder in the zip, just note that if you run a server and modify the mod files that other players might have trouble getting the "correct" version of the mod. If there's any desire for breaking this mod up into smaller targetted mods, let me know.
Assuming the mod is not picked up by the original author, have you considered expanding to include lead and Molybdochalkos (copper + lead)? There may be other very soft metals in game. Not looked.

Startlingly, the wikipedia article on Molybdochalkos (Leaded Copper) is quite lacking in information; I have no idea if it is cold forgable in real life. I will continue to look for a source on this but it was surprising that the info isn't on wiki already.
given it's an alloy of lead and copper, it's unlikely to be cold forgable. Similar to tin bronze in that regard, two soft metals make a hard alloy due to crystal structure mechanics

It's still been tricky to find any sources on this.
This source seems to indicate that at and above ratios of 4% lead, there is reduced impact resistance and increased segregation (which I'm reading as fragmentation).
But the game version has lead ratios between 88 and 92%, very different from 4%.
This source has diagrams that seem to indicate that for high ratios of lead to copper, the state behavior of the material seems to more closely follow that of copper up until ~90%, then it switches to that of lead. But doesn't help in understanding the malleability of the material from what I can tell.
Generally, it seems an alloy with such high concentration of lead to copper is largely useless and not well-studied. I would hypothesize that it breaks and fragments instead of maintaining the traits of both elemental materials, but I have no evidence of this really.
So, all I can say is that in terms of this specific alloy, we have no idea how it behaves and I'm unsure why it has been included in the game in the first place when so little is known publicly about it.
I'm going to keep the cold-forging of molybdochalkos available for now, until and unless something more is done by the devs to make use of the material and clarify what exactly it is.
I just assumed since it was mostly comprised of two soft metals it would be maleable. On researching Molybdochalkos, it is a historical greek metal lost to time. Funny enough, I queried chatgpt and it cited Vintage Story as inciting interest and discussions on the alloy. I checked its source and it is reddit, so .. yeah .. reddit. :|
Two ways of looking at it. You can add it to your mod and not be fabricating a lie since no one knows its composition. If you don't want to add it, no worries. It was just a thought.
I use Molybdochalkos a lot to make lanterns in Vintage Story. Lead is plentify in my experience and copper is used for so many other things until you progress to iron.
Yeah I think for now I will err on the side of "these two metals have this quality, their alloy should too" but keeping in mind that if we learn more about this particular blend at a later date, it might be more realistic to revert. Enjoy the cheaper moly for now!
