Latest release (for Vintage Story 1.22.0 - 1.22.2, potentially outdated):
CombatRebalance_VS1.22_v1.5.0.zip 1-click install
This mod intends to create a more well-rounded experience with weapons and armor (especially when it comes to archery), as well as with healing items. This mod includes the following changes:
Armor Changes:
- New recipes!
- Lamellar armor can now be crafted and repaired with bones; This new armor set functions as a tier between wood and copper
- You can now repair improvised wood armor with firewood; Doing so is nearly 20% more efficient than using the wood to craft another one
- New armor stats (see Google Sheets tabs 2 & 3 for full details)
- Armor debuff values have been distributed among armor pieces in a way that better represents the amount of body coverage each piece provides, meaning head and leg armor will have less debuffs than chest armor, with a ratio of around (2/5/3) for (head/chest/leg) pieces
- Walk speed penalties have mostly been removed from all headgear and instead been placed on chest and leg armor, with a ratio of around (1/4/5) for (head/chest/leg) pieces
- All ranged debuffs have been moved from the head and leg pieces to the chest armor pieces, allowing rangers to equip heavier head and leg armor
- Walk speed and hunger rate penalties have been reduced for both plate and Blackguard armor sets by roughly 30%
Weapon Changes:
- New recipes! - Sticks can now be crafted into arrow shafts, granting a more efficient option for crafting arrows
- New weapon stats (see Google Sheets tab 1 for full details):
- To compensate for its unusually slow attack speed, knife damage has been buffed by around 20%
- Damage scaling has been increased significantly between each bow upgrade, making it possible to one-shot hares and chickens before reaching bronze age
- Arrow breakage has been reduced by around 30%
Improved Healing:
- Poultices and bandages now heal around 20-25% more! (see Google Sheets tab 1 for full details); This is to keep from burning through all your flax and horsetails every fight, as well as making them more worthwhile for higher max health players
Mod Compatibility:
- Combat Overhaul - Combat Overhaul will overwrite arrow break chances from this mod; However, the armor stat trends from this mod will largely carry over to CO, as well as various armor set buffs and nerfs to better represent their IRL weight values (see Google Sheets tabs 4 & 5) (WARNING: this mod and the following three mods below are currently incompatible as of 1.22!)
- CO: Armory - Includes custom armor stats for all armor pieces from this mod! (see Google Sheets tab 6)
- More Arrows - Arrow varieties now require arrow shafts to craft
- Ancient Tools - Bark leather armor sets will have identical stats to their counterparts on Combat Overhaul
- Crossbows - Bolts will now require arrow shafts to craft
- Butchering Mod - Bone arrows will also require arrow shafts to craft and break chance has been reduced from 20% to 15%
- Archering - Archering will overwrite arrow break chances from this mod
To-do List:
- Combat Overhaul: Fix bug that gives bone lamellar armor unlimited durabilty
- Make crafting with arrow shafts optional for all mod compatibility patches
- Add config file
- Armory Mod: Add bone lamellar shirt and sleeves
- Add improvised bone armor

I need to give this mod a try.
does it still conflict with combat overhaul?
Unfortunately, the forked version of CO in 1.22 causes a bug which prevents armor stats from fully applying, among other issues. I've tried just about every solution I could think of to fix this with no results, so I may need to consult other modders for help. If you still use 1.21 though, the mod should work fine with the original CO.
thanks for the heads up, I just wanted to check. Armory and more arrows and this then.
There's currently a bug with the Combat Overhaul fork mod which causes duplicated armor stats in the UI. A patch is in the works.
These changes make so much sense.
Tysm for sharing <3
Hey is it possible to get a patch for https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/50596 (Archery) where this mod detects if it's installed and disables arrow breakage in favor of archery mods?
I shall look into this
Good news is I was able to load both mods and it appears that Archering automatically overwrites all arrow break chances. If you can, lemme know if it works on your end too. If it doesn't, it may be an issue with the mod load order, which can be resolved.
AffluenzaShot Structure is the same as the bolts compatibility. Nothing fancy

I finally got around to adding this compatibility patch. Thank you so much for your contribution!
Greensnack I would love to add that to my next patch! You may send your file whichever way you prefer and I can credit you in the patch notes and contributor list.
hey I made a patch that allows the arrows from the more arrows mod to use the shafts, do you want that included in a future update?
VaelophisNyx I made a fork that only includes the custom recipes. Enjoy! - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1glX3o8fSnfZpoiE9PmA3qY8grLhtGN1_/view?usp=drive_link
is this mod configurable, specifically: i liked the buffs to bear, brigandine and lamellar. but i dont want it on plate armor, is it possible to change it?
trojanhearse Thanks for letting me know! I'll make sure to fix that in the next patch.
Just noticed when testing that all bear hide armor variants decrease your hunger rate instead of increasing it like other armors. I am wearing brown bear hide armor here and my hunger rate goes from 100% to 94% instead of 106% like it should.
I also noticed when looking into the files, especially in the patches folder and the hides.json file that the values for the hunger rate are negative when they should be positive.
Compared to other armor values, their hunger rate values are positive.
Assuming this is unintended and just an oversight when putting in the values for the bear hide armors. 😁
The armor penalty redistribution is my favorite part of this! Helmets having the same walk speed penalties as the rest of the armor parts was always quite strange to me.
any chance you could split off the new recipes? Would love the arrow shafts and armor repair and such, but would rather not have the balance changes
UnnamedBeast Hey I know it's been a while but I finally got around to patching this mod compatibility bug. Thanks for letting me know about this!
there's a compatibility error between this mod and ancient tools, if you use ancient tools and this mod WITHOUT having combat overhaul installed, all bark leather armors bug out, please fix, temporarily i just deleted both barkleatherarmor.json and barkjerkinarmor.json on your compatibility/combatoverhaul patches
WARNING FOR COMBAT OVERHAUL USERS: there appears to be a new compatability error related to /behaviors in the patch file, preventing these two mods from working together. A fix is currently being worked on for this. UPDATE: as of v1.4.2, this has now been resolved!
Vynk I've only just noticed this error myself in the latest version of VS, despite having no other mods enabled. This issue has since been resolved. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
PLEASE add this for other versions, i want it in 1.20.7 so bad
I noticed a error in my logs refrencing this mod, and i've had a few minor bugs (right clicking on items modified by this mod in the survival guide does not show the recipe) that might be a conflict between my mods though.
here's the log section(s) in question (note, this isn't the full log, as some of the erros had around 20-30 lines per error):
15.3.2025 12:37:54 [Error] Patch 1 (target: game:itemtypes/wearable/seraph/armor.json) in combatrebalance:patches/compatibility/combatoverhaul/armor.json failed because supplied path /behaviors is invalid: The json path /behaviors was not found. No such element 'behaviors' at the root path

ect.
seems the issue is the file /seraph/armor.json has some issues
i've never really coded with json before, so not sure how it all works, but i'd wager,
'armor-*-lamellar-*' does not exist.
'armor-*-sewn-linen' does not exist.
'armor-*-tailored-*-linen' does not exist.
'armor-*-brigandine-*' does not exist.
'armor-*-chain-*' does not exist.
'armor-*-scale-*' does not exist.
'armor-*-plate-*' does not exist.
'armor-*-antique-blackguard-pristine' does not exist.
'armor-*-antique-blackguard-damaged' does not exist.
'armor-*-antique-blackguard-broken' does not exist.
'armor-*-antique-forlorn-pristine' does not exist.
'armor-*-antique-forlorn-damaged' does not exist.
'armor-*-antique-forlorn-broken' does not exist.
is this actually something others see in their logs? or is one of my installs (game, or mod) corrupted slightly?
i may try to fix this on my own, and if i figure out the issue, i'll post it here, unless you provide a way you'd prefer, over this.
PS: running VS 1.2.0.4, a bunch of other mods, but nothing that should directly conflict.. unless i've missed something.
sorry... did not realise that section was litterally for combat overhaul. Ignore me.
Zach2039 This was likely an error I made while copying the JSON text over between armor sets. I'll get a hotfix out for this pronto.
Recent release seems to make gambeson and leather jerkin torso and leg pieces take up all slots for their respective body section, making it impossible to wear cuirasses and other stuff on top of them. Reverting to v1.2.1 fixes this.
LarekFlynn Thank you for pointing this out for me. I'll get a hotfix made for this right away!
A typo in the repair recipe for game:armor-body-lamellar-bone. The ingredient has game:armor-body-lamellar-wood
I assure you, definitely very pleased and most excited to see what your plans hold!
TheSinisterRat I appreciate the support! For a minute I was worried no else really wanted these kinds of features, but these comments have been reassuring. I hope to continue on this mod in the future, as there are still some basic QoL features I'm considering.
Thank you very much for your work! I have had this on my follow list and have been very eager to see if there would be an update for said CO compatibility, and now here we are!
Your effort is much appreciatd, and I'm quite excited to add these very lovely changes to our server. Cool new armor, better bows and bow accessories, improvised armor repair and more, oh my!
Update: it took a while but this mod is now fully compatible with Combat Overhaul! LET"S GOOOOOO
Drex It appears that the bone armor will need values for the custom stats from CO. Until then, the bone armor is unequipable while the mod is active. CO is otherwise compatible with my mod as far as I can tell.
Also, CO appears to overwrite the stats for all armor, bows, and arrow break chances, but rest assured, your beloved knife damage buffs go untouched >:D
Thanks for bringing this mod to my attention. I realize I probably should've made compatability for it at the get-go, seeing how popular it is.
As a knife user, im loving that damage boost. Do you know if this is compatible with the Combat Overhaul?
