BUTCHERING & FAUNA OF THE STONE AGE

Butchering + FotSA

Compatibility Patch — Version 1.0.9

Bring your Fauna of the Stone Age animals into Butchering's carcass processing system. Collect, carry, hang, bleed, skin and butcher supported animals, with the fixes needed for their pelts, drops and carcasses to work together.

This is an independently maintained add-on for Butchering and Fauna of the Stone Age. Install it alongside the original mods. You can use any combination of the supported FotSA packs; only the compatibility for your installed packs will load.

Requirements: Vintage Story 1.22.x and Butchering 1.14.0 or later, plus your chosen supported FotSA packs.
Multiplayer: Install the same versions of these mods on the server and every connecting client.

Installation

  1. Install Butchering and the supported FotSA packs you want to play with.
  2. Add this compatibility patch to your Mods folder.
  3. Restart the game or server.

What It Adds

  • Carcass processing: fills gaps in Butchering's FotSA support, including adult and baby animals and the appropriate male and female carcasses.
  • Ground placement: adds missing support so affected carcasses can be put down and picked up again.
  • Pelts and rewards: fixes affected pelt and drop references, and adds suitable Butchering rewards such as sinew and offal to selected animals.
  • Animal fixes: corrects remaining problems with sounds, textures, carcass attachments and English item names that affect these mods working together.
  • Caninae: repairs affected male, female, baby and semitamed animal handling, including the vanilla fox compatibility used alongside that pack.

Some animals use a generic Butchering carcass or meat model where a suitable animal-specific model is unavailable.

A couple of exceptions: the world-spawned Rhinoceros Carcass is harvested in place with crouch + knife. Baby pangolins provide no hide or usable meat with the supported FotSA version.

Supported FotSA Packs

Version 1.0.9 supports the following pack versions. You only need the packs you want to use; the full collection is optional.

FotSA Pack Version

Updating an Existing World

Upgrading from 1.0.8: Version 1.0.9 automatically converts the old Giant Deer carcasses to their Butchering equivalents when the world loads, provided automatic remapping is enabled. This covers male, female and baby carcasses in their fresh, skinned, bled and rotten states, including those stored in inventories, placed on the ground or hanging on hooks. You do not need to finish processing them before this upgrade.

Back up your world before updating. Existing carcasses can retain rewards saved when the animal died, so their drops may differ from newly killed animals after a mod update.

Replacing a different compatibility mod? The Giant Deer migration above covers this patch's 1.0.8 release. Before removing another compatibility mod, finish processing its carcasses and clear them from hooks, tables, inventories, storage and the ground. Removing a mod that supplies items still in your world can leave those items missing.

Version 1.0.9 — What Changed

  • Added Moschidae support: adult male, female and baby musk deer can now be collected and processed through Butchering.
  • Giant Deer: switched to Butchering's own carcasses, added the v1.0.8 upgrade migration and ground placement support, and corrected the male, female and calf pelt names.
  • Updated pack support: Caninae 1.1.10, Capreolinae 2.0.19, Chelonioidea 1.0.9, Elephantidae 1.0.21, Sirenia 1.0.33 and Viverridae Plus 1.0.10.
  • Sea turtles and civets: updated compatibility for their current FotSA files, including the African palm civet sound fix.
  • Baby sea turtles: fixed the carcass left after decay.
  • Additional rewards: added sinew and offal to adult dasyurids, African palm civets and viverrids.
  • Removed: the old custom Giant Deer carcasses, redundant Caninae carcass model and texture changes, and outdated pangolin and rhinoceros patches.

Changelogs for 1.0.8 and earlier are available with their releases in the Files section.

RELEASE NOTES & CHANGELOG

Version 1.0.9

Musk Deer Support & Compatibility Fixes

This update adds musk deer support, brings sea turtle and civet compatibility up to date, and switches Giant Deer to Butchering's own carcasses. It also handles existing Giant Deer carcasses when upgrading from version 1.0.8.

Release summary: Added Moschidae support, updated Chelonioidea and Viverridae Plus compatibility, corrected several carcass drops, and added an automatic upgrade path for existing Giant Deer carcasses. This release also covers the newer FotSA pack versions listed below.

Added

  • Moschidae: added support for collecting, hanging, bleeding, skinning and butchering adult male, adult female and baby musk deer.
  • Added English names for musk deer carcasses.
  • Giant Deer: added automatic conversion of existing version 1.0.8 carcasses when updating. This covers males, females and calves, including skinned, bled-out and rotten carcasses.
  • Added ground placement for Butchering's own Giant Deer carcasses.

Updated & Fixed

  • Giant Deer: now use the carcasses already provided by Butchering.
  • Fixed Giant Deer pelts showing item codes instead of their proper male, female and calf names.
  • Chelonioidea: updated sea turtle compatibility to work with the current FotSA files.
  • Fixed baby sea turtles leaving the wrong-sized carcass when they decay. They now leave a tiny carcass.
  • Viverridae Plus: updated adult and baby civet compatibility to work with the current FotSA files.
  • Nandiniidae: updated the adult sound fix for the current FotSA files.
  • Butchering drops: adult Dasyuridae, Nandiniidae and Viverridae now also provide sinew and bloody offal.

  • Capreolinae 2.0.19
  • Elephantidae 1.0.21
  • Chelonioidea 1.0.9
  • Dinornithidae 1.0.25
  • Sirenia 1.0.33
  • Viverridae Plus 1.0.10
  • Moschidae 1.0.0 — newly supported.

Removed

  • Removed this patch's duplicate Giant Deer carcasses following the switch to Butchering's own versions.
  • Caninae: removed carcass model and texture overrides that are no longer needed.
  • Manidae and Rhinocerotidae: removed old compatibility patches that referred to files no longer used by those packs.
Upgrading from version 1.0.8: Existing Giant Deer carcasses are converted when you first load the world with version 1.0.9, provided automatic remapping is enabled. This includes carcasses on the ground, hanging on hooks, or stored in inventories and containers.

Version 1.0.3

Butchering 1.13.6 Compatibility Metadata Update

A maintenance release updating the declared minimum Butchering version after successful backward-compatibility validation of the existing 1.0.2 compatibility content.

Release summary: The minimum declared Butchering dependency has been lowered from 1.14.2 to 1.13.6. No compatibility definitions, carcass mappings, rewards, shapes, textures or gameplay behaviour have changed from version 1.0.2.

What Changed

  • Lowered the minimum declared Butchering dependency from 1.14.2 to 1.13.6.
  • Version 1.0.3 is otherwise functionally identical to version 1.0.2.

Release Validation: Butchering 1.13.6

Backward compatibility with Butchering 1.13.6 was specifically tested on a dedicated Vintage Story 1.22.7 server before lowering the dependency requirement.

Test method: Compatibility Patch 1.0.2 was used with only its local Butchering dependency floor temporarily lowered to 1.13.6. No compatibility content was altered for the test.

Targeted validation passed

  • Dedicated-server startup and clean shutdown.
  • Client connection and normal mod loading.
  • Successful JSON patch application with no compatibility patch errors.
  • Caninae male and female carcass mapping.
  • Caninae baby carcass handling and processing.
  • Gender persistence through inventory, ground placement, retrieval and hooks.
  • Machairodontinae male and female handling and processing.
  • Gender-specific rewards where applicable.
  • GroundStorable placement and retrieval.
  • Large carcass ground placement and retrieval.
  • Wall and ceiling hook handling.
  • Carcass carrying and supported storage.
  • Bleeding, skinning and final butchering.
  • Representative Casuariidae processing.
  • Representative Pantherinae processing.
  • Representative Sirenia processing.
  • Carcass state persistence across a complete dedicated-server shutdown and restart.
  • Continued carcass processing after the persistence restart.
Validation result: No compatibility-specific runtime, persistence or patching errors were observed during the targeted Butchering 1.13.6 test.

  • Final release package passed JSON, patch-target and archive-structure validation.

Contribution Credit

Parts of the GroundStorable and Machairodontinae compatibility work in this release originate from a private, previously unreleased compatibility patch created by HeroSpoompls.

HeroSpoompls approached this project about combining their work with the existing compatibility patch and subsequently submitted it for that purpose. The merge was carried out with their full knowledge, consent and blessing, and following their request that the two implementations be combined.

Their contribution was reviewed and reconciled with the existing project rather than being represented as newly authored work. The subsequent expansion, corrections, additional compatibility fixes and validation were performed by AzureTai.

The contribution and merge history is publicly documented in GitHub Issue #1, “Additional patch.”

Compatibility Notice

06/10/26 Updates:

  • Fauna of the Stone Age: Meiolaniidae has been updated to v0.1.12.
  • Fauna of the Stone Age: Vombatidae Plus has been updated to v0.4.7.

I’ve checked both updates and confirmed that compatibility changes are needed. Please stay with the supported versions listed above when using v1.0.9 of this mod.

I’ll include both updates in the work for v1.0.10, and add, update or remove patches where needed before release.

These updates mean some extra work and testing, so the release will take a little longer than originally planned. I’m also checking a few other reported issues.

I’m still aiming to have it ready within the week, provided testing goes well. Thanks for your patience!

Original message:

A new Felinae update landed shortly after v1.0.9. I’ve downloaded it and will check it tomorrow to see whether any compatibility changes are needed.

If changes are required, I’ll hold off for a day or two to catch any further FotSA updates before releasing another patch.

For now, the supported Felinae version remains 0.2.14, as listed above.

Hello.  I hunted a "Small Grey Fox" from the FotSA Caninae mod, picked it up, and it turned into a vanilla Black wolfs carcass from Butchering.

VS version: 1.22.7
Butchering version: 1.14.3
Butchering compat version: 1.0.8
FotSA Caninae version: 1.1.9

All other FotSA mods:
Bovinae:  0.3.6
Capreolinae:  2.0.18
Casuariidae Plus:  1.1.13
Chelonioidea:  1.0.8
Dinornithiformes Plus:  1.0.25
Felinae:  0.2.14
Iniidae Plus:  0.1.7
Machairodontinae:  1.1.13
Manidae:  1.0.23
Meiolaniidae:  0.1.11
Pantherinae:  1.2.18
Sirenia:  1.0.32
Thylacinidae Plus:  0.1.7
Vombatidae Plus:  0.4.6

Other mods are Butchering 1.14.3 and about 240 others.  I can't figure out how to copy a list of them all down and paste them here, so I hope you can get by without knowing all of them.
I do have Expanded Foods Core and ACA, as well as Sonya's Quality Fowl 1.0.1  and a new patch mod for SQF, Sonya's Quality Fowl Butchering Patch 1.0.2.

I did get the grey fox skin when I skinned it on a hook, so the black wolf model seemed to be purely visual.  It simply threw me for a loop, thus I figured I'd mention it to you!  Hope this helps with a future fix update, if possible, and thank you in advance if you're able to do so~!

Investigating this has turned up thst it's completely an oversight on my part, working on a fix will be rolled in ot the next releace.

Hi Jess, thanks for the information and description of the bug, when you have a spare moment could i politely ask you to copy this over to the issue tracker, and where possible attack any client or server  main or debug logs you may have at hand for me (it's linked above, youll need a github account to post), easiyer for me to keep track of open issues that way.

@AzureTai: Hi Jess those fixed were rolled in to releace v1.0.9 thanks for the bug report, good catch!

Hey, thank you for the quick turn around,  Azure!  I do have a few things I think need pointing out in regards to harvesting output with Butchering, though.  Some large animal skins,  are giving me upwards to 5 Huge hides,  when,  at most from the largest vanilla animals,  such as the brown bear,  I have only ever harvested 2 huge hides, and that was playing as the Vanilla Hunter class.  Now, there could be some variables that are adding to this in my current case as I use 'Aldi's Classes' mod, and am playing as the "Wildrunner" class and have a 20% boost to animal harvest loot.

Still, 5 Huge Hides from a large Bovine is a bit much imho,  so maybe,  and this is only a suggestion,  but maybe the output from the animal skins when turned into hides needs looking into and adjustment?  Now,  that said,  I've not used any FotSA mods without your mod before.  I used your mods linked FotSA mods in the description to decide which mods i was going to add, so it could very well be FotSA that's giving such a large amount of hides for large animal skins, and not your mod.  Stil, I just thought I'd bring that to your attention.

Another thing, and this is about Vanilla Foxes, but it was pointed out to me that  Caninae was designed specifically to have vanilla Foxes disabled, and that enabling them is somehow a detriment to the Caninae mod?  Not sure exactly what thay means, but that is what i was told, so could you perhaps add a config option to disable the Vanilla Foxes spawning your mod re-enables?

Thank you in advance for any considerations you have for the things I have pointed out, and thank you so much for this awesome mod!!  I'm so glad it is being kept up to date with all mods in relation when they are updated!

~Jess

P.S.:  I'm gunna be a bit of a grammar cop here for a moment and point out that the Releace  is actually spelled as Release. 🚓

@NekoJess: Hey, thank you for the quick turn around, Azure! I do have a few things I think need pointing out in regards to harvesting output with Butchering, though. Some large animal skins, are giving me upwards to 5 Huge hides, when, at most from the largest vanil

Hi Jess, thanks for the detailed report!

I’ve checked FotSA’s bovine recipes, and a single pelt can produce several huge hides, including five for some animals. That quantity is explicitly set in FotSA’s recipe, rather than added by this patch. Since you mentioned turning a pelt into hides, that looks like the most likely explanation.

The 120% hooks and your additional 20% loot trait are another possibility we can test, although they’re less likely to explain the crafting output. They may affect how many pelts you receive during skinning, which is a separate stage.

I’m partway through testing the latest Felinae update, so I’ll add some checks using the larger bovine animals directly. I’ll first try to reproduce the pelt and hide output without Aldi’s Classes, to see whether it comes from FotSA’s normal behaviour. If I can’t reproduce it, I’ll add Aldi’s Classes and test with Wildrunner and the same loot bonus. I’ll also check the 120% hooks to be thorough. So far, I’ve only seen single pelts using the 100% hooks.

On the foxes, I’ve double-checked our patches. They enable the Butchering carcass items and processing, but don’t change fox spawning. Caninae’s spawning restrictions remain in place. If you’re seeing vanilla foxes spawning naturally, let me know and I’ll look into it further.

Thanks for the config suggestion too. Adding a regular mod config would mean introducing a C# DLL, and I’d prefer to keep this patch content-only for now, particularly since it already leaves Caninae’s spawning settings unchanged.

And regarding the spelling: I’m dyslexic, so typos do slip through, but I appreciate the heads-up. Thanks for pointing it out!

@ironfoxx6442: looks like its not working with the penguins, which honestly just makes me feel like a monster for killing penguins

Could you please provide

  • Your Vintage Story version
  • Your Butchering version
  • The compatibility-patch version
  • The name and version of every installed FotSA pack
  • Your complete mod list
  • what exactly is not working, e.g ground placement, placing on hooks (wall or ceeling and type), skinning, drops, bleeding, curing time, butchering

Where you have them Client-Main, Client-Debug and if possible Server-Main and Server-Debug log files.

One I know those details and have any relvent log files I can do some bug hunting and see what the issue is.

Update:

This is rather straight forward, you are running older versions of some of the FotSA animal packs, that are no longer supported by the compatability patch v1.0.8.

The packs listed below will need to be updated to the supported versions (seen above in the description table).

  • FotSA-Casuariidae-v1.1.11
  • FotSA-Sirenia v1.0.30
  • FotSA-Spheniscidae v1.0.17

Once upgraded everything should start working properly for you.

if you run in to any further issues please let me know.
Thanks again!

Oriognal Post:

Hey Foxx, thanks for that info ill get back to you once i have done some testing and let you know whats going on.
it may help with file uploading if you mirror this over on the github issues area lined above, youll need a github account to submit a issue.

Additionally:
As a general compatibility recommendation, I would suggest running only one FotSA/Butchering compatibility suite at a time.

Both compatibility suites patch some of the same upstream content, so running them together may result in overlapping patches or make it harder to determine which mod is responsible for a particular issue.

This is not a recommendation of one compatibility mod over the other, only that whichever one you choose should ideally be run on its own.

FotSA-Spheniscidae v1.0.18
was released shortly before Butchering & FotSA Compatability Patch v1.0.6.

At present, Butchering & FotSA Compatability Patch v1.0.6 and earlier are not compatible with Spheniscidae v1.0.18 due to changes introduced in the latest FotSA update.

I am currently working on v1.0.7, which will update the compatibility patch to support the newly released Spheniscidae version.

Apologies for having to push two releases so close together. I had not realised that Spheniscidae had also received an update at the time v1.0.6 was released.

Please let me know what versions of the FotSA mods you are running, as well as the version of Butchering you are using, and I’ll be able to take a look into this for you.

Update:
Just a note here: I can see you are running my compatibility patch alongside another compatibility patch. Running both together can cause issues.

All of the Dinornithidae errors above are coming from the other compatibility patch. From the paths it is trying to use, it looks like that patch is not compatible with the version of Dinornithidae you currently have installed.

The two Spheniscidae errors are coming from my patch. I’ll be able to investigate those properly once you provide the modpack details and the exact versions you are running.

Version 1.0.5 is releaced, and fully supports all the FotSA Packs at their current releace versions, please see above in the description for version numbers.

Update:
Also re-analysing the new releaces of

  • Fauna of the Stone Age: Manidae v.1.0.22
  • Fauna of the Stone Age: Rhinocerotidae v1.0.27

Origional Message:

Recently Identified Multiple Crash Issues:

Following a further audit of the newer FotSA Packs, several upstream FotSA data issues were identified that are causing Butchering to crash in both single-player and dedicated server/client setups when processing certain animals.

Mods Affected by the Identified Crashes:

  • Butchering v1.14.0, v1.14.1, v1.14.2 & v1.14.3
  • FotSA - Bovinae v0.3.6
    • Broken Taurine cattle pelt references.
  • FotSA - Capreolinae v2.0.17
    • Incorrect baby harvest drop references in the Moose, Western Roe Deer and White-Tailed Deer branches.
  • FotSA - Machairodontinae v1.1.12
    • Incorrect adult harvest drop reference affecting the shared Machairodontinae adult harvest table.
  • FotSA - Vombatidae v0.4.6
    • Invalid baby-pelt reference affecting several wombat joey variants.
  • Butchering & FoSA Compatability Patch - All currently released versions (through v1.0.4).
    • As of v1.0.4, these upstream crash issues had not yet been identified and therefore were not addressed by the compatibility patch.

Additional Non-Crash Fixes Identified:

  • FotSA - Bovinae v0.3.6
    • Taurine cattle #antlersskin texture-mapping errors affecting semi-tamed/adult rendering.
    • Missing male Taurine calf Creative-inventory shape mapping.
    • Missing display-name/localisation entries for the restored Taurine calf, cow and bull pelts.
  • FotSA - Capreolinae v2.0.17
    • Broken baby sound references in the Capreolini baby definitions pointing to the nonexistent:
      creature/capreolus/babyscared
    • Restored use of the existing Capreolus baby call for the family-following behaviours.

All of the fixes are now in place in my development build, and I’m just finishing off the remaining runtime testing before pushing the release out.

I wanted to post an update now so the community is aware of the known crash issues and what’s being done about them, rather than silently working on the fix with no indication of what’s going on.

Status:
Final validation in progress.

Quick compatibility notice:

Update 13/09/26:
Version 1.0.4 is releaced, and fully supports all the FotSA Packs at their current releace versions, please see above in the description for version numbers.

Update 11/09/26:
Am also aware of the other FotSA updates and am activly working through them all to check for any aditional compatability patches that may be required.

Origional Post:
I’m aware of the new Manidae 1.0.21 and Rhinocerotidae 1.0.25+ updates.

Both updates have changed things that the compatibility patch relies on, so version 1.0.3 of the Butchering × FotSA Compatibility Patch is not currently compatible with those two new versions.

I’ve already found the areas that need updating and I’m working through the fixes and testing now.

For the time being, if you’re using compatibility patch 1.0.3, please stick with Manidae 1.0.20 and Rhinocerotidae 1.0.24.

I’ll get the updated compatibility patch released once I’m happy everything is working properly.

Haven't forgot, been busy. We're trying to replicate how it's happened as today I haven't been able to replicate it for some reason, however, it may not be the same animals. Our server is keeping track of their current kills to rule out a particular species possibly causing it. Will update as I get more info.

No worries, and I appreciate you getting back and letting me know, once you have managed to replicate it, freel free to log in to github and submit a bug report directly there with the log files and other relevent details, as soon as that goes up ill jump on and take a look to see what exactly is causing the issue.

How does this mod compare to the other FOTSA-Butchering compatability mods? Yours certainly has a lot more information.

AzureTai , Sep 6th at 6:08 PM
@Sniper115: How does this mod compare to the other FOTSA-Butchering compatability mods? Yours certainly has a lot more information.

Hi Sniper115

Thanks for reaching out regarding the compatibility mod!

The main difference is that this patch was created to provide a more complete compatibility solution across the FotSA packs my community was actually using at the time.

When I started the project, there wasn’t a single published compatibility patch covering all of the FotSA packs that still needed additional support beyond what Butchering already handled natively. The available compatibility work also reflected earlier combinations of Butchering and FotSA pack versions, so rather than assuming those definitions were still complete, I carried out a fresh audit against the current files.

My community had asked me for a more complete solution, so the original goal was simply to fill those remaining compatibility gaps. During the analysis and testing, however, more issues came to light than were initially expected. These included incomplete gender and life-stage handling, carcass placement and hook behaviour, missing processing attributes, and several upstream FotSA data issues which directly interfered with Butchering compatibility.

As a result, this patch ended up becoming broader than the original scope. It preserves Butchering’s native support wherever that is already complete, fills the missing or incomplete compatibility areas, and applies a small number of closely related upstream corrections where they are necessary for Butchering and FotSA to work together properly.

The other major difference is probably the amount of validation and documentation. I tend to test releases fairly extensively on dedicated-server setups and document what was actually checked rather than simply listing a supported version number.
I also try to be as upfront as possible about my findings, testing and known compatibility scope, so anyone wanting to use the compatibility mod knows precisely what it does, what has been verified, and why particular fixes are included.

So, in short, the goal is not to replace other compatibility projects for the sake of it, but to provide a current, modular and more complete compatibility layer for the FotSA packs that need it.

I hope that answers your question satisfactorily. Please do feel free to get back to me if you have any other questions.

While it doesn't affect the performance of the mod do you think you could have your Changelog actually stick to just labeling the changes please?
Having changelogs with lines in them such as:

Mod Update 1.0.3
  • No compatibility definitions were changed.
  • No carcass mappings were changed.
  • No reward tables were changed.
  • No shapes or textures were changed.
  • No gameplay behaviour was changed.

is just really irritating to parse through. I'm also a big fan of formatting documents to be easily legible at a glance but the way these're formatted just seems bloated with these big boxes that make a bunch of negative space.

I don't mean to accuse or point fingers but the changelogs have the apperance of just being a copy/paste from an AI output, personally I'm not a fan but that is my taste.

Just out of curiosity, was the mod created by AI? I’m asking because, if so, a disclaimer and a tag are required.

@TheDarkPlague: The mod looks cool!Just out of curiosity, was the mod created by AI? I’m asking because, if so, a disclaimer and a tag are required.
Thanks!

AI has been used as a development aid during this project, primarily to help analyse reported bugs, review logs and compatibility data, compare Butchering and FotSA definitions, and report back on likely compatibility gaps so I could better understand what needed to be corrected or patched.

The actual compatibility work has then been reviewed, integrated and tested by me, including dedicated-server and connected-client testing.
AI was also used for some documentation assistance, and the current cover image is AI-generated
So while the mod itself is not an AI-powered or automatically generated mod, AI has absolutely been used as a tool during its analysis and development.

I’ll add a quick note to the bottom of the mod description page to make this distinction clear for future visitors.

If ModDB implements a specific mandatory tag covering background development assistance like this, I’m happy to use it

If you happen to know of any specific moderator guidance on that, feel free to link me!
AzureTai , Sep 6th at 10:35 AM

Just a quick heads up:
Version 1.0.3 is a backward-compatibility maintenance release which only lowers the minimum supported Butchering version to 1.13.6 after successful testing.

If you are already using 1.0.2 with Butchering 1.14.2 or newer, you do not need to update. No compatibility definitions or gameplay content changed in 1.0.3.

Why AI instead of an artist, or a cover made by yourself, even if it’s extremely amateurish?

@Voudir: Why AI instead of an artist, or a cover made by yourself, even if it’s extremely amateurish?

It feels espescially weird to use AI for a compatability patch of a mod that doesn't use AI.

Share the sentiment, personally I'd rather see it missing an image, be a sketch or an in-game screenshot over AIgen, there is so much of it in the DB. ^^;

I think I might be stupid apologies. I realised it obviously says 80% of the drops when I use a flint hook, so I'm guessing that means that sometimes the pelt is lost too? I tried in creative to skin a boar and a rabbit on a flint hook and lost the hide for the rabbit but not the boar, and on a shining hook I got both. Althought when I lose the drops it also doesn't give me fat/ivory from the boars as well as the skin.

Ahh yes that is exactly what is happening!

Confirmed as intended game mechanics - I've been testing by butchering in one of the advanced hooks tried 4 rabbits and two large sow's  only lost one pelt from one of the rabits due to mechanics.

Thank you very much for producing a mod that covers all of the FotSA creatures which the others had not, will be swapping to this one for the time being. The time and effort you put in is appreciated. 💜

Tyeia, Aug 27th at 4:06 PM

So, how does your mod differ from me and Pepe merging our two mods (which an active PR is open on Pepe's repository to do that)? Based on my brief jaunt into your repo, it just seems like you grabbed the json files from my fork of his repo and threw it into your own repo with some of your own upstream fixes of FotSA. If something was out of date on our mods or you meaningfully added anything to the butchering compatability I'd be cool with it, but this is just looks a wholesale rip-off of both my mod and Pepe's mod with a sprinkling of your own FotSA fixes mixed in.

AzureTai , Aug 27th at 7:35 PM

I’m going to answer this plainly, because calling the mod a “wholesale rip-off” after only a brief look through the repository is a serious accusation, and it does not fairly represent how the mod was put together.

I was given a specific task: provide working compatibility between Butchering and the current FotSA packs, do it using as few additional mods as possible, and have it ready by a fixed deadline.

When I started looking into it, I found your mod, Pepe’s mod and the open pull request to merge the two. I was genuinely pleased when I found that PR because I thought it might solve the problem for me. I watched it for several days, but nothing happened with it. It was not merged, no combined version was released, and there was still no single mod I could actually download, install and test.

An open PR is not a finished release. I cannot put an open PR onto a live server, and I could not wait indefinitely in the hope that it might be dealt with before my deadline. When that deadline arrived, the PR was still sitting there and the only available option was to install both of your separate mods.

Even using both mods would not have fully dealt with the setup I was working on. Butchering had received several updates and had reached version 1.14.2. FotSA packs had also been updated, new content and variants had appeared, and Butchering itself was now handling more FotSA animals natively. This meant that some of the older compatibility patches were no longer needed, while other newer animals and problems were not covered.

That is why I acted and made my own compatibility mod. The work that was needed had not been completed or released by either of you, and I had a deadline to meet. I was not going to leave the server without working compatibility simply because an open PR existed which nobody had yet actioned.

I did not just take your two mods, throw their files together and upload the result under my own name.

I reviewed:

  • Butchering 1.14.2.

  • 20 current FotSA animal packs.

  • Butchering’s own existing FotSA support.

  • Your compatibility mod.

  • Pepe’s compatibility mod.

  • Several older compatibility projects from previous game versions.

That review resulted in compatibility sections for 17 FotSA packs. Three of the 20 packs I checked were already fully supported by Butchering itself, so my mod does not interfere with or duplicate that work. Where Butchering already handles something correctly, it is left alone.

The mod also does considerably more than simply place your mod and Pepe’s mod into one package. It includes:

  • Support for semitamed Caninae variants that were previously missed.

  • Fixes for all affected Caninae babies being impossible to skin.

  • The missing Caninae baby workload and blood-type settings.

  • A correction for the incomplete female Caninae carcass definition.

  • Better dead and hanging carcass models for Caninae animals.

  • Restored butchering support for vanilla red and Arctic foxes while Caninae is installed.

  • Missing sound settings for the affected Felinae lynxes.

  • The missing Viverridae Plus sound settings for Nandiniidae.

  • Separate conditional patches for each FotSA pack, so people can install one pack, several packs or all supported packs without the missing ones causing errors or failed patches.

The mod was released for Butchering 1.14.2. Since then, I have also checked it against Butchering 1.14.3 and have been running that combination on a live multiplayer server without any compatibility problems found so far.

Yes, I used both your mod and Pepe’s mod as references. I have never denied or tried to hide that. Both of you are named and credited on the mod page and in the repository because your earlier work was useful during my research.

Using something as a reference is not the same as taking the whole mod and claiming it as my own.

These are JSON compatibility patches aimed at the same animals, the same file paths and the same Butchering system. If two patches are both adding the same required behaviour to the same animal, parts of those files are naturally going to look similar. The animal names, paths, behaviour names and required values are determined by Butchering, FotSA and Vintage Story. They cannot simply be renamed or invented for the sake of making the files look different.

Where an older patch was still correct, the same basic result may appear in my mod after I checked it against the current files. Where an older patch was no longer needed, it was removed. Where it was incomplete or no longer worked properly, it was corrected or replaced. Nothing was accepted blindly just because it appeared in one of the earlier compatibility mods.

The credits were not added as some attempt to cover up copying. They were added because I openly acknowledged the work that came before mine. If I had intended to steal your work and pretend it was entirely my own, openly naming and crediting both you and Pepe throughout the project would make very little sense.

If you believe there is a particular file or section that was directly copied in a way that goes beyond the shared names, paths and JSON structure required to patch the same thing, then please point to it specifically. I will compare it properly, explain why it is there and address any genuine issue that is found.

What I do not accept is a broad accusation that the entire mod is a wholesale rip-off based on a brief look through the repository—especially when the proposed merger had not been completed, neither existing mod provided the full current compatibility that was needed, and I had to do the work myself to produce something that was actually current, complete and available to use.

I still think it is in bad taste to not even put a comment on EITHER modpage and just more or less copy 99% of both mods. Sure, you added fixes that were missed from the butchering compatability and fixes to FotSA itself. Here, let me go through your inclusions:

  • Support for semitamed Caninae variants that were previously missed. - I cannot speak to Caninae as it was in Butchering itself, and should be reported to the Butchering mod author to fix.

  • Fixes for all affected Caninae babies being impossible to skin. - In default butchering mod, see above

  • The missing Caninae baby workload and blood-type settings. - In default butchering mod, see above

  • A correction for the incomplete female Caninae carcass definition. - In default butchering mod, see above

  • Better dead and hanging carcass models for Caninae animals. - In default butchering mod, see above

  • Restored butchering support for vanilla red and Arctic foxes while Caninae is installed. - In default butchering mod, see above

  • Missing sound settings for the affected Felinae lynxes. - This is a fix to the Felinae mod itself.

  • The missing Viverridae Plus sound settings for Nandiniidae. - This is a fix to the Nandiniidae mod

Separate conditional patches for each FotSA pack, so people can install one pack, several packs or all supported packs without the missing ones causing errors or failed patches. - I had already implemented this, at least in my patches. Pepe's patches were missing the dependsOn field, but that is an issue that should have been at least reported to Pepe or me to be fixed.

The only parts of your list that include the patches we wrote is the mod dependencies, which is an easy fix, 1 line per patch. Everything else is Butchery's compat patches (I trusted the Butchery mod dev to know how to patch their own mod)

The merge PR has been open for not even a week. Both mods are open source, you could have submitted a PR or reached out. You didn't even ask. I imagine if you had dropped a comment in any of our mods, one of us would have done something. If you reported the issue, same deal.

For laughs, i diffed itemtypes/cervini.json between our two mods and they are exactly identical. Additionally, the pseudorandom "meh why not" choice i made to have diprotodontidae use the redmeat texture simply because they happen to drop both redmeat and bushmeat is included.

You can say that you had a deadline to meet and you made however many extra changes, but none of your changes save one actually changed any of the files Pepe or I wrote. And the change that does affect it would not have even caused an issue in a server. It simply would have just thrown an error when attempting to patch a mod that isn't installed, and could easily be fixed in 15 minutes. Based on running a diff on some of your files and the fact that your naming conventions (including mixing whether the dae/nae is included in the json patch name due to general lack of knowledge on my part) match identically to mine, I'm willing to wager your code matches (save for your one extra line per patch on some of Pepe's stuff) ours line for line, which is why i claimed you ripped off our mods to begin with.

I will report the bugs you found with the Caninae compatability with Butchering to the Butchering mod dev, so they can possibly fix it.

If any blame should be assigned or someone needs to be the target of a pissing contest about mod contents based on a template system, then that target should be me.

Before going into details on that, two factors should be kept in mind: firstly, these are json mods based on an existing templated system, meaning there is no chance of uniquely designed code, since json isn't code - it's data in this context. Secondly, is the factor of time frame which I fully understand also involves whatever real life throws at both you Tyeia and Pepe.

Back to the details that matter. I'm responsible for a community server and have built the specific mod pack we're playing with. Since we launched our current season several weeks ago I have had this sort of compatibility mod on my list of things to monitor and await someone getting around to either making or updating a compatibility mod that covered the FotSA mods we have in our pack. I was delighted to see the two of you talking about merging your two mods and down the line perhaps adding more custom models instead of making use of the default models.

This is then where the bone broke: nothing more happened. As mentioned previously my community had already been waiting weeks without compatibility and there was mounting pressure being put on me to get compatibility into the pack. With another maintenance coming up, I was still waiting for something to happen from the two of you, with nothing further happening on either of your mod pages. I did see the PR, but again nothing happened in a timely manor that would have allowed me to use one of your two mods. I'm up against a limit on mod count and I had a deadline to meet, so I asked AzureTai if they would kindly look into this and make one mod that could cover our needs, resulting in this mod.

I could no longer wait for the two of you two get around to pushing an update for your two mods to be made into a single mod that covers what I needed from a single mod. AzureTai does not deserve to be flogged over an ask from me, nor over the fact that the contents of these content mods are json, json and only json, which is a templated predesigned system you all produce configuration files to manipulate - in effect a set of configuration files.

Of importance in all of this, as AzureTai has already pointed out, you were both properly credited for your work. You can claim ownership over code mods and the uniqueness of such mods (I have a code mod on this site, designed specifically for our community server), but it is far more difficult to claim and get ownership over configuration files which is what these pure json content mods really are. I am not trying to diminish the work put into making these compatibility content mods in any way - believe it or not, I do understand the work that goes into them. At the end of the day, educated guess says that the both of you more than likely have looked at other similar compatibility mods to learn how to do them in the first place, meaning the authors of those mods have ownership if we are following your logic. If the two of you had pushed an initial single mod that covered most or all the FotSA mods in our pack, I would have used yours, but I just could not wait however long it would take the two of you to come up with and publish a single compatibility mod that covers my needs.

My primary complaints are as follows:

  • The contents of the mod that used my mod as "inspiration" appear to be identical to my own files.
  • As far as I can tell, Pepe seems to be able to respond within a couple of days on the mod DB. I check the mod DB daily. If you or AzureTai had merely expressed you needed it sooner I'm certain one of us could have nudged it along. I'm primarily bothered that no one even reached out to either of us about it before just deciding "welp we'll just do it ourselves" using all of the json files we already had done as a foundation. This is why so many mods on this DB don't post their mod source on GitHub

I recognize I use "code" interchangibly with json data often. That is primarily because I view the contents of the mods I make as code. Yes, it is a json data format used to template or configure various parts of the game. But each one is in itself unique and requires knowledge to assemble. If everyone could do it, it wouldn't be special.

On top of the fact that with JSON patching, AzureTai likely could have just used Pepe and my mods separately, and made a separate patch to add the "dependsOn" fields to the mod patches on top of the other fixes they wanted to make.

Attribution is all well and good, and is often the backbone of open source, but there is a clear and defining line of saying "i used this as reference" when both the filenames and file contents show they just copied the assets from my mod into theirs. Any mod I have basically taken the reins of I make abundantly clear what I used from the other mod author and what I have changed, as well as offering to remove my own version when they update theirs, or upon their request.

Long story short, it is my own fault for not having a license on my mods to protect myself from someone just taking whatever I have made and claiming it as their own because they are too impatient to wait and unwilling to ask. I have rectified that moving forward by adding a license that covers those bases and effectively turns my mods into source-available mods instead of open-source.

basically what he did was take a whole bunch of mods throw it into AI and go here make me a mod lmao I too went through it all... it is very copy pastey with a few mods..... sad really I was interested in this as I play FoTSA, buy naw I will not support lazy ML thieves throwing peoples hard work into a robot so it can forever steal an authors work. Regardless of time crunches or deadlines the problem with AI is people are so fucking impatient now and want shit nownownow! but do not realize that actually sitting down and writng things out takes time 2 weeks you had to wait??? brother I have been developing a shader mod for 8 months now and it is still no where ready to be released and I am most likely gonna encrypt it now with a password you have to ask me for because assholes like you exist on here.... shameful learn to code and get a life..... @SalemStyles: basically what he did was take a whole bunch of mods throw it into AI and go here make me a mod lmao I too went through it all... it is very copy pastey with a few mods..... sad really I was interested in this as I play FoTSA, buy naw I will not support l

I admittedly use AI to simplify reading documentation. It is 1000% easier to ask an AI "hey is this thing possible" and have it be able to check the docs and say "oh yeah you can do this using these functions". I composed a license for all of my mods basically requiring someone to ask my permission or have the mod be "abandoned" before they can make another release of my code. I imagine that should be sufficient to be able to report any mods that violate that license.

I guess  I do not mind people using it as a tool heavy math conversions finding research and thinking of new ideas. what I do not respect is people using it for the entire process then claiming they did it all themselves it is just not a helpful thing to the world or the community I was pretty harsh to this person but I see it so much and it does irk me but I probably should tone it down a little bit on the negative remarks I get it people want to just make things but I strongly believe that you should at least make the effort to learn to do it properly but ya I do agree it probably would make heavy shader math and engine conversions easier than hours by hand. I just can not really see how people can be proud or Idk have a feeling of accomplishment when nothing was done by them at all.... I do apologize to this modder for my harshness I will do better going forward and try to keep my mind a bit more open I guess. Sorry author of this mod I do apologize for being harsh.

Requires 1.14.2 but is alredy compatable with 1.14.3.

Have updated the description to reflect this, thanks for the headsup!

Does this replace the two existing compat patches for FoTSA?

@Chezzprinn: Does this replace the two existing compat patches for FoTSA?

Yes. This mod is intended as a single, up-to-date replacement for earlier FotSA compatibility patches or mods, including but not limited to:

  • PepeCitron – FotSA Butchering Compat
  • Tyeia – FotSA Butchering Compat Plus

Important migration note:

Before removing any existing compatibility patches or mods:

  1. Back up your world.
  2. Fully process all affected carcasses.
  3. Ensure no carcasses remain on hooks, tables, in storage or player inventories, or being carried.

The patch has been designed with existing-world compatibility in mind, but removing mods that previously supplied carcass items can never be guaranteed risk-free. Backing up first is strongly recommended.
