Hi there! I had a quick question: Is this a serverside mod only? I have it on both the server and client side, but the mobs still spawn on the surface, and the drifters still throw rocks, despite having the "no rock chucking" mod as well :c thanks for your time

Vwert, Mar 14th at 3:06 PM

MattyK i opened up the mod files and edited the drifter one to be *-normal and it seemed to work.

all 3 jsons for bowtohrn, drifter and shiver have -surface. should all of them be corrected by replacing it with -normal?

Its been a while so I might be wrong, but I think it was just the base drifter, you could just test it yourself.

MattyK, Mar 13th at 7:23 PM (modified Mar 13th at 7:26 PM)

I'm getting the same error as Vwert on 1.22.rc.2

Furthermore, it's causing a moddb download error on other clients that attempt to join my game.

Vwert, Mar 12th at 5:39 PM

Im getting an error on 1.21.6 that says

Spoiler
Patch 0 (target: game:entities/lore/drifter.json) in game:patches/drifter-patch.json failed because supplied path /server/spawnconditions/runtime/maxYByType/*-surface is invalid: The json path /server/spawnconditions/runtime/maxYByType/*-surface was not found. Could traverse until /server/spawnconditions/runtime/maxYByType, but then '*-surface' does not exist. Full json at this path: {
  "*-normal": 2,
  "*-deep": 0.89,
  "*-tainted": 0.55,
  "*-corrupt": 0.35,
  "*-nightmare": 0.23
}

I think you need to change *-surface to *-normal

The page description could use more information on how this changes spawn mechanics

there i took out disabling rock throwing and made it, its own mod! so if you liked that feature you can find the mod at:

No idea why you would remove drifters throwing rocks, such a random thing to remove.

Duranudal, Feb 17th at 4:01 PM (modified Feb 17th at 8:08 PM)

GamingOnInsulin as Lycan said, it's in the Variants section of the Official Vintage Story wiki.

And simultanously, what they're saying is effectively the case. Normally 'Surface' enemies can spawn from y 0.85 up to y 2.00. Or in simpler terms, if your world height is 100, they should stop spawning once you go deeper than y 85, and can spawn up to y 200.

LycanBlackpaw that's why I'm curious to find out whether it's intentional or an oversight, or or or!
I'm fine with the abominations residing in the ground, where they belong, and Drifters not throwing rocks at me. But...what's up with Nightmare drifters spawning this far up high? That's what I'm curious about. :]

LycanBlackpaw, Feb 15th at 11:11 AM

GamingOnInsulin It's just in the Variants section of the official wiki; however, an easier patch would just be to remove each of the "replace" patches for the non-Surface drifters (*-deep, *-tainted, *-corrupt, and *-nightmare) since they're effectively redundant.

It seems kind of odd that they're in the drifter patch to begin with, when the other two only patch the surface variant (since all others already have a max spawn height well below sea level). Maybe it was intentional?

GamingOnInsulin, Feb 14th at 12:23 AM

@Duranudal
wich wiki are you talking about just the defautl vinatage story wiki if so its my first time going trough the wiki are you willing to say where under wich section i can find the info for that info ?

kind regard insulin

First, great mod. I stopped having shivers and the likes spawning inside my bases. So it does work as advertised. :p
But I've started wondering - I was just near the surface, checking out a cave, and a nightmare drifter came jumping out of it. Surely they shouldn't spawn up here, right? At least the wiki says they should spawn at a much lower level.
Checking the json file for drifter spawns (drifter-patch.json), they're all set to "maxYByType" 0.98, to which to my limited knowledge means ALL drifter variants can spawn the moment you plunge even your toes into the underground?
The bowtorn or shivers seem to only have it limited to the surface ones, so I believe the other variants truly only spawn the deeper you go.

I went around the problem by modifying the maxYByType value to be closer to the wiki stats, but was curious to see whats up with the default values on it.
I still like the mod!

itsjusty0gurt , Jan 5th at 6:34 AM

HaraiseTenshi fixed it i think! let me know!

HaraiseTenshi, Jan 4th at 4:54 PM

Seems that if you changed the Worldheight therefore the Sealevel it messes up the mod. Had Nighmare Drifters spawn in my "training cellar room" directly below the surface after activating the mod

itsjusty0gurt , Jan 4th at 6:48 AM

I updated for upto 1.21.6 ! sorry it took so long!

RischEdan, Dec 6th 2025 at 2:24 AM

Yes, replacing "land" with "lore" in the JSON appears to have fixed this.

Strix02, Nov 3rd 2025 at 4:13 AM

Looks like the mod broke as of 1.21. From checking, devs changes the file paths from "land" to "lore" for hostile mobs. Easy fix in the JSON patch I bet.

_Ale1ster, Aug 7th 2025 at 1:40 AM (modified Aug 7th 2025 at 1:41 AM)

LunaGore CrSilent in the mod there is only one .json in the burried in the assets folder that can be opened with notepad. there are 9 sections of the text seperated by these symbols {}
if you look at each section they're designated to different folder paths that are labled either drifter, bowtorn or shiver. I wanted only the bowtorn to stop spawning outside of storms but leave drifters and shivers alone entirely, so I just deleted all but the bowtorn sections and saved. make sure not to mess with anything outside of the bracketed sections you deleted and try to replicate the sequence and orientation of everything as it was originally, it's pretty simple to see the seperated sections. I've been able to do this with a couple of simple mods like extended sleep times.

RischEdan, Jun 9th 2025 at 2:42 AM

Novabella Yes, they can still spawn during storms.  Tested in 1.20.12

Novabella, May 23rd 2025 at 7:49 AM

Does this mod at least allow them to spawn during storms?

CrSilent, May 21st 2025 at 8:32 PM

LunaGore

Ye me too... Also keep the rock chucking aswell maybe... Some configs would be nice.

LunaGore, May 15th 2025 at 4:00 PM

Would it be possible to create a config for this? I'd like for surface drifters (not bowtorn or shivers) to exist and keep the rest below the light level.

CrSilent, Feb 11th 2025 at 9:10 PM

itsjusty0gurt

you are a real legend man!

itsjusty0gurt , Feb 11th 2025 at 6:28 PM

TheSinisterRat LunaGore McFrugal done! i split the mod into 2! The other mod is Monster Drops!

TheSinisterRat, Feb 6th 2025 at 7:50 PM

Would like to throw my name into that hat: I have some mods for drops that I am quite happy with, but my server and I would greatly appreciate if we could not be quite so inundated with bowtorn on the surface.

Whatever you decide, thank you for your work - modders make an already amazing game sublime.

Edit: Thank you, you are most wonderful.

LunaGore, Feb 6th 2025 at 2:56 PM

Yeah if you could either include the changes to drops in the mod description or have it as a separate mod that'd be great.

McFrugal, Feb 6th 2025 at 8:04 AM

Why does this change drops at all?  That's not in the mod description!

itsjusty0gurt , Feb 5th 2025 at 9:01 PM

Entity DONE!

itsjusty0gurt , Feb 5th 2025 at 4:32 PM

Entity I will add that in asap

Entity, Feb 5th 2025 at 11:29 AM

I'm curious if this prevents spawns during a temporal storm. I like the changes that this mod makes, though I would suggest keeping jonas parts as a drop chance for double-headed variants. Jonas parts are used in lots of recipes and it can already be a challenge getting the exact parts needed.
