Latest file for v1.20.4:
bmt_1.0.6.zip 1-click install

This is a mod that adds variable durability and mining speed based on certain tool parts used along with affecting the appearance

The three main parts to a tool are:

  • Toolheads
    • Come in two types, Smelted and Hammered. Smelted comes from tool molds and Hammered comes from being made on an anvil.
  • Handles
    • There are 7 Handle types. 4 are wood based, 1 is bones and 2 are metal based.
  • Binding
    • There are 6 bindings and having none is an additional option.

Altogether this provides 96 options for every tool currently supported at every level of metal.

Known Bugs

Currently carpented and hewn handles are not being recognized as handle material.

Mod Compatibility:

None at the moment, while i figured out mod dependencies for patches.
For those that would like to create compatibility patches itd probably be a simple replace function in notepad++.
For example, game:axe- being replaced with bmt:axe- as I follow the vanilla naming conventions.

Upcoming features:

Recipes for both Reinforced and Speedy Variants
More model adjustments (eg. bindings to models that have none, differentiation between smelted/hammered types)
Tool head shape adjustments.
additional tool molds for those missing them.

Special Thanks:
I want to thank KenigVovan for all the coding he did to get this working as intended.
I want to thank CaptainOats for letting me use the shape files from his class mod.

Theres actually a handful of bugs we've encountered.
smelted and hammered prefixes are not in the current version but will be added back in the next one in the description field.
pickaxes arent being named correctly
hammers are showing too many versions in recipes.
Handles arent being named correctly
and some handles are not currently useable.

Should hopefully have most of these ironed out in the next version.

Absolutely adore this mod.

EDIT: Everything is fixed, clearing the mod cache, uninstalling all client-side mods (probably a redundant step) and reinstalling the game seemed to fix everything.

Are the prefixes (Smelted and Hammered) supposed to be present for the latest version? They don't seem to appear for me and I don't know whether it's intended behavior or not, I'm presuming it isn't. I believe it's my own fault but not sure what's gone wrong where.

Also, pickaxes from this mod show are named 'bmt:pickaxe-tool' whereas every other tool is completely fine and properly named.

💬 Blackmare , 3 days ago

All good, I wrote most of this during late nights and just stuck to it even though I knew it was wrong haha but I was going more off the work being done on the metal than the correct naming. But will fix that up for the lang file.

💬 DeZaster, 3 days ago

Just a little grammer thing. Smelted and Hammered are incorrect when it comes to the tool heads. When metal is poured into a mold it is Cast(ie. a cast iron pan), and when it is worked on an anivil it is Forged.

Sorry if I seemed rude, but the writer in me was screaming.

An update will be coming out fixing the lack of durability change based on smelted/hammered worktypes

💬 Blackmare , 3 days ago

All I can think of is a mod incompatibility then.

💬 Christiaan, 4 days ago

I had no other versions installed, cleared the cache but the log still giving the same warnings and ingame nothing has changed.

💬 Blackmare , 4 days ago

Make sure to remove any extra versions of my mod in your mod folder and wipe the cache as Im not getting those errors.

Would also suggest a new save for the update as the tools wont update to the new ones.

💬 Christiaan, 4 days ago

I updated to the new version, I am still running into issues with crafting recipes.
What is strange is that the log only seems to speak of axehead but right now I am testing to craft a tin bronze hammer with a carpented handle, with and without rope.
Now if I look in the handbook on the carpented handle I do not see any sort of tin bronze hammer only bismunth, steel and silver.
Did you also mean to remove smelted and hammered?

ApocRagnarok TheCrimsonSpark
The ore chunk issue is an issue I overlooked because it happens in the nugget cs file but worked previously with salty's manual crushing so didnt think too much about it. Will be fixed in the next update when code is finalized.

Christiaan

mind sharing your log? Im not getting that issue

💬 Christiaan, 4 days ago

Vintage gave an error code for the missing recipes.
Grid Recpie 'bmt:recipes/grid/tool head conversions.json': Output item code game:axehead-steel cannot be resolved.

And it shows many lines alike.

💬 TheCrimsonSpark, 4 days ago

seconding ApocRagnarok I also can't crush with the hammer to make nuggets.

💬 ApocRagnarok, 4 days ago

I can't seem to make nuggets from ore chunks using the copper hammers I made. I've got a smelted copper hammer with stick handle and a hammered copper hammer with stick handle, and neither can break chunks down.

💬 Blackmare , 5 days ago

Odd, the recipe file seems to be fine on my end. However the coding for the mod will be done soon so will wait for that to finalize before fixing any more bugs.

💬 Christiaan, Mar 15th at 12:11 AM

I tested some more.
Knife, prospecting pickaxe and the axe work with ropes.
Pickaxe, shovel and hammer don't work. They can be made with stick and hewn handles and vines, however not with ropes.
I am not sure about anything else, but if you check the handbook you can see some of them have the same line as text as before when it didn't work. BMT:item-shovel-tinbronze-hammered-reinforced-stick-none.

💬 CookieGod, Mar 14th at 11:31 PM

Ropes work for axes, so I don't believe all other tools are affected.

💬 Christiaan, Mar 14th at 11:10 PM

It is for all tools, I can only craft tools with vines no other bindings.

💬 CookieGod, Mar 14th at 7:32 PM

I really appreciate how quickly you patched that. The hammered pickaxe doesn't seem to support bindings now though.
So whilst it works, you don't get the added benefit of the bindings, unless that's intended of course.

Either way, thank you for patching the mod so quickly, you've earnt my follow. :)

💬 Blackmare , Mar 14th at 1:48 AM

latest update should resolve that. typo in the recipes.

💬 Christiaan, Mar 13th at 10:30 PM

I too have the issue with the hammered pickaxe, I have the items in my handbook but they don't show a craft nor am I able to craft them. I tried with multiple handles and binding combinations. I don't have any mods related to tools.
I have not tried any other tools, is it just the pickaxe that doesn't seem to work?

💬 CookieGod, Mar 13th at 5:35 PM

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but I'm unable to craft a pickaxe using the hammered head. I've tried different types of handles and different types of bindings.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? And yes, the pattern is correct.

💬 Jobnor, Mar 13th at 1:54 AM

this looks sick, excited for its future

💬 burgertanker, Mar 13th at 1:34 AM

I'd love to use this mod, but there's one big thing preventing me from using it more - survival handbook bloat

💬 Blackmare , Mar 11th at 12:44 PM

Im currently commissioning a friend to make the mod code driven rather than everything in json before making any compat stuff. But it may be a bit before that finishes.

💬 MaiaK, Mar 11th at 8:34 AM

I adore this mod. Found a little thing though: made a copper knife with carpented handle and leather binding, and turns out it can't be used as a knife for basically any modded recipe that would use knives (cutting fish from primitive survival, cutting meat from expanded food, etc), just vanilla recipes (for now I resorted to carrying two knives and reasoning it as my character being obsessed about each knife doing a specific thing)

💬 SaltyWater, Mar 10th at 9:57 PM

OliverRook I agree! But it will probably be on my end! I'll wait until the mod comes out of wip!!

💬 OliverRook, Mar 9th at 5:48 PM

Would be cool if one of the first mod compatabilities is to Manual Tool Crafting.

💬 Blackmare , Mar 9th at 5:46 PM

NVM I figured out the issue. The hammer had a few typos and made it uncraftable. should be fixed now.

💬 Blackmare , Mar 9th at 5:25 PM

ThatGuyNick are you using both a modded saw and a modded hammer?

💬 ThatGuyNick, Mar 9th at 11:11 AM

i found a bug.

the vanilla recipe for angled gears don't work

💬 RangeCreed, Mar 5th at 3:28 AM

Ardail

Use VS launcher and favourite the mod

💬 Ardail, Mar 3rd at 8:53 PM

oh this looks really cool, wish we could sub to mods to keep an eye on for when more bug fixes or updates come out so I can remember to try it out after some of the teething issues are ironed out

💬 Blackmare , Mar 2nd at 8:11 PM

Nyphra Thanks for that! I guess  i never added the transition property from oiled to cured. New update should fix that and is currently set to 48 hours like the old HRF mod.

As for the handbook entries I dont seem to have that issue. Could you check to see if the page codes are the same?

💬 Nyphra, Mar 2nd at 6:02 AM

I might be missing something, but there doesn't seem to be a recipie for crafting the wooden handles?

It says its cured, but the oiled handle doesn't have anything that indicates how to do that either. The mod also seems to have added entries twice in the Handbook as well?

💬 Gazelutza, Mar 1st at 6:10 PM

Good work and good idea!

💬 Blackmare , Mar 1st at 3:03 PM

Calminaion That is what I get for not checking things properly 😭 but fixed in latest release

💬 Calminaion, Mar 1st at 12:44 PM

Have been looking for something like this, I like the different models. I have only quickly tested in creative to see what you have put in. I noticed that to make a Stick Handle you need to make a Bone Handle first. I assume this is an error? Will be keeping an eye on this and look forward to seeing how this progresses.

💬 Junrall, Mar 1st at 4:48 AM

Blackmare

Thank you. I'll toss it into my mix!

💬 Blackmare , Mar 1st at 2:41 AM

Junrall

As of right now its only these tools: "axe", pickaxe", "hammer", "saw", "knife", "shovel", "prospectingpick", "scythe", "hoe"

Was originally going to add cleaver but didnt see immediate benefit.

And sure Ill throw a better explanation in the description but basically its all the combinations.
Smelted and Hammered have a 20% difference to vanilla tools. Then the values next to the handles and bindings are the multiplier. the numbers from there are basically the value you get from multiplying it against the smelted or hammered durability.
So for instance bones are a 0.9 multiplier and no bindings are a 0.7 multiplier.

So it becomes 200 x 0.9 x 0.7 for 126 durability but for a hammered tool head itd be 189.

💬 Junrall, Feb 28th at 10:23 PM

Blackmare

I like the idea of seperate component parts changing durability and cosmetics of tools.

A couple of questions before I toss this into my Chaotic Folder-O-Mods:

  • Are ALL tools effected?
  • And, for the life of my two brain cells... I cannot understand what the spread sheet is telling me. Can you please elaborate?
💬 Aim392, Feb 28th at 9:55 PM

Super excited to see a mod in the nature of ToolWorks! Love the added complexity and spreading good tool components around multiple professions/gameplay.
