According to Dr. Wikipedia, early lime kilns burned layered charges of crushed limestone and coal in large pits. I didn't want to make a new multiblock structure but a bloomery is close enough, even if it is a bit smaller. The only problem is it's not possible to smelt lime in a bloomery because the smelting temperature of 825°C is below the 1000°C minimum temperature of the bloomery. I wasn't a fan of just changing the smelting temperate of lime and the wiki article went on to describe that crushed lime stones, not powder, were preferred for air flow through the charge. Crushed lime actually already exists in Vintage Story, there just isn't a way to craft it so this mod patches in the ability to process limestone, chalk or marble into crushed lime and then to smelt it in a bloomery.

You can either use a hammer to smash the stones in your crafting grid (just like metal nuggets) or you can automate that process with a pulverizer. The resulting crushed lime product can be smelted in a bloomery--24 crushed lime smelts down to 12 quicklime using 6 charcoal or coal. That's more fuel efficient than the wiki article would suggest but it's a similar raw product to fuel ratio used for smelting calcined flint in a bloomery and that felt right to me. To put it in perspective, 4 full bloomeries will produce 48 quicklime which makes 192 mortar (using the new 1.22.2 recipe) which when combined with 3,072 bricks (!!!) will make 384 brick blocks (that's 6 full stacks of 64). It's not industrial scale but it's easier than micromanaging a bunch of fire pits.

incompatible with stoneworks and produces sintered lime

SpookyJ, 4 days ago

does this work with Geology Additions and MN:Geology stone types or just vanilla?

@SpookyJ: does this work with Geology Additions and MN:Geology stone types or just vanilla?

Just Vanilla for now. I don't play with those mods so I'd have to spin up a new world with them loaded so it hasn't been a priority but I know both add lime-equivalent stone types to worldgen.

Awesome! I was just wanting this a few hours ago, thanks.

Can we also get calcified flint as well? It's really fuel intensive otherwise

doesn't seem to work on my end w/ my modlist.

What does "doesn't seem to work" mean?

  1. Are you able to crush limestone, marble, or chalk in a pulverizer to receive crushed lime?
    • Alternatively, are you able to crush limestone, marble, or chalk in your crafting grid with a hammer to receive crushed lime?
  2. Are you able to smelt crushed lime in a bloomery to receive quicklime?

@GodzillaFan_13: sorry for not responding eariler and for being vauge, the game wouldn't allow me to insert limestone into the bloomery

Use a hammer or a pulverizer to smash limestone (or chalk or marble) into crushed lime. Then put the crushed lime into the bloomery.

I once wanted to implement this idea myself, but you got to it first - keep it up 😄

Bro, also think about adding overfiring flint for producing fire clay. It’s basically the same kind of mechanic, and it would be really cool if it will included in your mod as well.
