Latest release (for Vintage Story 1.21.0-pre.1 - 1.22.2, potentially outdated):
bloodisegg-2.1.0.zip 1-click install
Requires Butchering and Expanded Food
v2.1.0+ requires Butchering v1.10.12+ and Expanded Foods 2.0.0-dev.1+
Did you know that blood has a composition so similar to eggs that it can be used as a substitute in baking? One of the more (in)famous examples are blodplättar (aka blood pancakes).
So stop drinking raw blood (you heathen) and get baking!
Recipes blood can be used in:
- Breaded balls
- Breaded fish
- Breaded meat
- Breaded mushrooms
- Soft dough
- Dumplings
- Hardtack
- Muffins
- Pasta
- Stuffed peppers (How do you make stuffed peppers if bell peppers aren't acessible in the game? I made a mod for that!)
Note for v2.1.0+
Butchering (as of v1.10.12) added the option to use blood instead of water for a lot of recipes, which conflicted with my pasta recipe. To fix this, I doubled the flour needed to make pasta but also doubled the output.
Built-in compatibility:
- Acorns
- ⚠️Ancient Tools - These patches work for Ancient Tools versions prior to v1.6.0. After that, the item IDs were changed and EF didn't update theirs. Now that Ancient Tools is splitting into different mods for 1.22, they haven't implemented bark flour again yet. Once they do, I'll rework the compat patches.
Let me know if there are any problems or if you want me to add more compatibility patches!
Old compatibility (Removed in 2.1.0)
- Wildcraft: Herbs and Spices - EF removed their compatibility with 2.0.0-dev
- Wildcraft: Fruits and Nuts - EF removed their compatibility with 2.0.0-dev
- Expanded Bloodbread - Butchering v1.10.12+ does this now
- Sausages - Hasn't been updated since VS 1.20.4, use Jazzberry's Cooking Tweaks instead

Now that Expanded Foods is being split into several mods, I did a quick check to see if this mod still works with it. It looks like everything is fine, but if you come across any issues, let me know!
Uhh, hello... based alert?
A compliment from the man himself. Thanks, glad you like it!
I'm starting a new playthrough and I haven't actually used this yet, but one day I'll get around to Butchering compatibility in EF. This should get the job done in the meantime! 😄
And thanks for the pepper mod too!
CaptainOats already added some Butchering compat to EF (mainly being able to use blood in place of water in recipes). And you're welcome for the pepper mod! The biggest reason I made it was so I could make stuffed peppers lol
Doesnt seem to be working with soft dough in 1.22, with expanded foods dev 2.0.0-dev.8. It works as an option to replace the water portion of the soft dough, but not the actual egg requirement.
The patch must have been changed, I'll look into it
I can't seem to replicate this. Are you sure that this mod is installed, up-to-date, and active? Having only Butchering installed would allow the water portion to be replaced with blood.
I'm an idiot. That was the issue. I dont even know how I missed getting this into my mod folder. Apologies.
All good! Glad we figured it out
I am horrified
Since Butchering is on VS1.22+ and Expanded Foods 2.0.0-dev.7 is suppose to mostly work on VS1.22 (according to their discord), I quickly checked this mod and everything appears to be working fine. At least I didn't see any errors related to this mod. I also checked Acorns compatibility which still works amazingly. I tested the newest version of Ancient Tools, the one that's split into different mods, and it doesn't appear that bark flours are a thing right now so those patches obviously don't work still.
If you've had a look and tested everything, good to know. I'll give it a shot at running it with the new patch of Culinary Artillery and hopefully nothing explodes.
Good luck! Let me know if you come across any issues
Raz0rMan3 Nice! I've never actually tried blood bread (or any sort of cooking with blood) IRL but I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Faeldray Reinstalled Ancient Tools for this... Still worth it.
So funny thing, this actually inspired me to try blood bread. Local farmers market baker had a lovely deep brown rye bread, and it was so good. I would've never tried it if it weren't for this mod, so I must thank you!
Raz0rMan3 You can keep Ancient Tools, having it doesn't break anything. The bark flour just currently can't be used in any EF recipes. But I'm glad you like my mod so much!
Uninstalled ancient tools for this... worth it. Quality mod!
Azraile install player corpses and make a cannibalism mod that makes player corpses drop meat and become the Sweeney Todd of Vintage Story lmao
with butchering you can use blood in place of water too..... soon all the bread will be meat and blood
Removed the explicit Expanded Foods dependency so it can now be used with the unofficial 1.21 patch. This also means that VS won't tell you if you don't have some form of Expanded Foods installed and activated so make sure you have that!
Faeldray Thank you so much, my friend, for the update! ❤️
Jayro Fixed the compatibility with Expanded Bloodbread (and also Sausages I found out) in the latest release. After some thought, I figured the best way deal with the conflict was to add another flour ingredient to the blooddough (so it's now blood, flour, flour in the mixing bowl) and have it output 2 doughs instead of 1. It means that you'll always need an even number of flour but you'll use half the amount of blood per dough
Jayro Hmmm, I'll have to think of the best way to do that so it doesn't make either recipe too complex
"Could you change the pasta recipe? There's a minor compatibility issue with the Expanded Bloodbread mod—if you use the mix ingredients in the mixer, instead of getting bloodbread, it gives you pasta."
CoffeeToffee Yes, it has the same saturation as a liquid chicken egg (20 protein)
RayTC That's fair, I forgot to consider those who are kind enough to cook meals for their human friends :)
@Faeldray how rude, they can indeed cook
Does it give the same nutrution value as egg?
lol, I thought I was the only one drinking blood.
Elocrypt Oh please, everyone knows that vampires don't cook! They're all about that raw diet ;)
I smell vampires!
~ Edit: I know its a valid replacer ;)
