Raise, train, and send BLACKWING into the wilderness to scout strong prospecting country for Copper, Tin, Zinc, Bismuth, and Iron.

BLACKWING does not reveal exact ore veins. It returns with an approximate map marker, leaving the actual prospecting and mining to you.

 

How BLACKWING Works

1. Find and raise your raven
Raven Eggs can be discovered while harvesting naturally grown trees. Place the egg somewhere at least 5°C. It needs 48 accumulated warm in-game hours to hatch. Cold only pauses incubation.

The chick grows into an adult after 72 in-game hours.

2. Give BLACKWING a home
Craft a Raven Perch from 5 sticks in a T shape and place it near your adult raven. Interact with the perch to bind it as BLACKWING’s home.

BLACKWING can learn minerals without a perch, but it must have a bound perch before it can scout.

3. Teach mineral families
Show BLACKWING a supported mineral sample to teach it what to recognize.

BLACKWING can learn:

• Copper
• Tin
• Zinc
• Bismuth
• Iron

Supported samples include raw ore, nuggets, metal bits, ingots, and plates from those families.

Once BLACKWING has learned a mineral family, it remembers it permanently.

4. Send BLACKWING scouting
Show BLACKWING a sample from a mineral family it already knows.

It will leave its perch and scout the surrounding wilderness. After some time, it returns home.

If it finds sufficiently promising country, BLACKWING places a permanent Strong [Mineral] Prospecting Area marker on your map.

If nothing good enough exists within its current range, it may return with NO RESULT. That is intentional.

5. BLACKWING gets better with age
There is no XP bar or skill menu. BLACKWING improves naturally as it gets older.

Approximate scouting range:

Young raven: 750 blocks
10 days old: 1,250 blocks
30 days old: 2,000 blocks
60 days old: 3,000 blocks

Older ravens can search much more country, making difficult minerals easier to scout for.

Each mineral family also has its own one in-game day scouting cooldown.

6. Finish the job yourself
BLACKWING does not reveal an exact vein, depth, or quantity.

Travel to the marked area and use the prospecting pick normally.

Remember that the propick uses actual ore names:

Tin = Cassiterite
Zinc = Sphalerite
Bismuth = Bismuthinite
Iron = Limonite, Hematite, or Magnetite
Copper = Native Copper or Malachite

BLACKWING finds the country. You still find the ore.
