Description

If you're like me, at one time you tried to make a custom window and wondered why you were freezing to death inside your own house. That's because the game is very picky about what counts as an insulating block face when it comes to chiseled blocks: 50% of the face of the block (voxels directly against the block face) must contain material. So a glass pane in the middle of the block doesn't count, even if it does completely block the outside world.

This mod changes that. Instead, for each position on the face, it checks whether that row contains a voxel anywhere within the block. As in vanilla, at least 50% of the face must be covered.

Sound changes:

  • Chiseled blocks don't need to be 50% solid to block outside sounds anymore(vanilla behavior), they only need to have 75% coverage instead
  • Chiseled blocks don't need to be 50% glass to make the raindrops-on-glass sound anymore(vanilla behavior), it only needs to have 50% coverage made of glass instead

Performance concerns

Does it hurt performance? No, not at all! The new calculation is not complex and it only happens when a chiseled block is changed. The insulating faces are cached to be used later, in case a room changes. On save load, it needs to calculate again, but that is true for vanilla as well. The performance impact should be negligible.

Safe to add/remove to ongoing saves?

Yes!

Mod compatibility

Should conflict with other mods that change the insulation logic, for obvious reasons

Chiseled ground placement: Allows placement of big items that take an entire block on chiseled blocks, like firepits, chests, beds, etc
Dense ground storage: Allows placement of small things, like pots and bowls, inside chiseled blocks.
Chiseled Wall Mounting: Allows placing wall-mounted things on chiseled blocks

Great mod! But wondering if there's any chance of adding a .json where the user can set the percent values themself?

Would this have any incompatibilities with the mod window display?

I don't think so. This mod changes the behaviour of chiseled blocks only, while that mod adds new window blocks that have their own insulation logic.

I feel like I am dumg but when you mean 50percent of the block does it mean like 50percent of that face of the block so does that mean I can do half opened window ?

Imagine that we start with parallel rays on the insulating face going outside, one per voxel. If they hit a voxel, it's covered. If they reach the end, it's open. At least 50% of these rays need to reach a voxel. So yes, half-open windows are possible

This sounds excellent. Is it compatible with the VS Roofing Mod, since that enables fusing chiseled blocks with roof covers?

I didn't make any special handling for vsroofing, I think it handles the roof insulation calculation itself. All I can say is that I play with vsroofing myself, and I didn't have insulation issues, even with chiseled walls under roofs. Let me know if you run into issues, though!

Love this!  Now my rooms with the big beautiful windows count as rooms!

Interesting I'll have to check this out. It probably conflicts with my insulation mod BUT your mod sounds like exactly what I was theorizing would be a much better solution! Having the insulation be calculated when the chiseled block is changed instead of just blinding assuming less than 50% (and some of the other rules relating to double faces) is much cleaner.

Oh hey, thanks! I had been using your mod for a while, but wanted a version that kept the coverage requirement. I was worried that it would impact performance, and it probably would have if I had kept my initial flood-fill strategy. But this per-row strategy turned out to be performant and vanilla-like, win-win!
