Alternative Map Icon Renderer Continued

A fully client-side visual enhancement mod that provides your map icons with customizable scaling, outlines, hover highlights, and mod compatibility — including Vincomomy's shop map icons.

Features

  • Player icons have a togglable option to stay visible at the edge of the map just like waypoints.

  • Dynamically resize all waypoint icons, including shop markers from vinconomy.
  • Slightly increases player and waypoint icon size;
  • Replaces the waypoint icon "shadows" with thick outlines;
  • Aligns waypoint icons on a pixel grid for a cleaner render;
  • Prevents waypoint icons from resizing on mouseover — instead, icons are highlighted;
  • Fixes the size of waypoint icons' clickable area to prevent from creating a new waypoint when trying to edit an existing one;
  • Removes waypoint index from hover text to reduce clutter.
  • Multi-language support.

Customize Everything

  • Toggle square or round icon shapes
  • Choose thick or thin outlines
  • Change icon color for player pins
  • Enable/disable player icon pinning
  • Hide/show icons at runtime

Vinconomy Shop Icon Support

All visual features (scale, hover, outline, etc.) are fully applied to shop waypoints in Vinconomy.

Cartographer Waypoint Icon Support

All visual features (scale, hover, outline, etc.) are fully applied to shop waypoints in Cartographer.

Commands

All features are available via the .amir chat command in-game:

.amir square [on/off] – Sets whether or not waypoint icons are rendered as squares instead of circular

.amir outline [thin/thick] – Sets waypoint icon outline style

.amir pc [#hex] – Set the color of your player pin (#RRGGBB or #RRGGBBAA

.amir size [1.2] – Resize all waypoint icons (e.g., 0.5 for default, 1.0 for double)

.amir pin [on/off] – Toggle player icon edge pinning

.amir hide – Hides all waypoint icons for the current session

.amir show – Restores waypoint icons hidden by .amir hide.

.amir help – Displays a summary of these instructions

Configuration

You can also configure the mod through altmapiconrenderer.json:

{

"square_waypoints": false,

"player_colour": "#FFFFFF",

"thin_outlines": false,

"waypoint_scale": 0.5,

"pin_player_icons": false

}

Installation

  • Drop the .zip or mod folder into your Mods/ directory.
  • Requires no server-side support unless using custom server features.
  • Safe for multiplayer and singleplayer use.

Privacy Notice

This mod is client-only. Players who install it can see all visible online player positions, unless the server takes explicit steps to hide player entity data. Future versions may support server-controlled opt-outs.

Compatibility

Vinconomy - Shop Icons are compatible.

Cartographer - Waypoint Icons are compatible.
MobsRadar - `.amir pc` will cause all mob icons to be tinted, use with caution.

Compatible with other UI/map mods if they do not override WaypointMapComponent or EntityMapComponent globally

⚠️ Note: Due to Vintage Story’s shared GUI shader, this mod’s color customization may affect other mods like MobsRadar. Unless those mods reset their shader state before rendering (possibly?), this behavior is unavoidable.

Is there a way to change the play pin scaling? The scaling config doesn't appear to affect that. Also outlines don't seem to work currently on Vinconomy waypoints.

Wow, after I made a suggestion for improving the map icons with outlines probably a year ago and basically made my own private bug-plagued version about half a year ago it's nice to see that someone less lazy than me finally did a proper version and published it when I return to VS xD

Good job :D

Thanks for the heads up, unfortunatly there is nothing I can do to prevent this from happening.
Due to Vintage Story’s shared GUI shader, this mod’s color customization may affect other mods like MobsRadar.

Janeator
Added support for Cartographer.

💬 metasynthie, May 12th at 3:31 PM

Not really an incompatibility, but worth noting that if used along with Mob Radar, the color set by .amir pc will tint the color of every single mob that's tracked by Mob Radar, too. Somehow Mob Radar must be creating moving icons for mobs in a similar way to the player's own icon.

Oh my GOD, what a lifesaver. Thank you so much for making this! The map icons in VS have always given me so much trouble, I appreciate you taking the time to make this accessibility mod a LOT!

💬 valrossenOliver, Mar 22nd at 2:12 PM

Works for me in 1.20.6

💬 jabes, Mar 12th at 3:23 AM

Anyone know if this works with 1.20.4?

💬 Ghetta82, Mar 11th at 3:53 PM

Hi, i have a bug with the player marker orientation if i go north, in map and minimap the arrow on player marker is on west side, if i go west is on south ect.

💬 Janeator, Feb 23rd at 5:54 PM

Hi, any chance this could work with the Cartographer mod for shared waypoints? https://mods.vintagestory.at/nbcartographer

I really need the thick outlines, the default icons are terrible.

💬 Zadak, Feb 8th at 8:21 PM

This is awesome :)

💬 Echoweaver, Dec 1st 2024 at 2:30 PM

You are awesome. Thank you!

💬 AliciaX, Dec 1st 2024 at 2:15 PM

Released a version for 1.19.* enjoy!

yellowincarnate

This is a standalone mod, ensure you have other versions disabled or removed. There's now both v1.19 and v1.20 versions I released.
That bug should be fixed in both versions, but if you are using the incorrect version then the bug will be reproduced.

💬 yellowincarnate, Nov 30th 2024 at 11:54 PM

Are you getting a bug where only when using the Alternative Map Icon Renderer your character facing in the minimap is rotated from where you're actually looking?

💬 Echoweaver, Nov 30th 2024 at 9:51 PM

This was never released for 1.19, and the creator is on indefinite hiatus. Would you consider releasing that patch?
