Alegacy Quest Framework

Quest Engine for Vintage Story

Found a bug or have questions about how something works? Join our Discord and ask your questions there!

Alegacy Quest Framework is a full-featured quest and boss combat engine for Vintage Story. Originally started as a fork of VSQuest by G3rste, the project has since been completely rewritten and expanded into a standalone framework powering the alegacy.online server.

The mod includes quest system with branching NPC dialogues, real-time objective tracking, boss hunts with rotation and combat AI, solo trials with difficulty tiers, custom items with quality and stats, a journal, promo codes, quizzes, reputation, and more. All systems are modular — use what you need.

Everything is data-driven through JSON configs. No C# knowledge required — define quests, dialogues, items, bosses, and entire questlines purely through configuration files distributed as separate mod packs. Full documentation is available on GitLab. A dedicated visual desktop editor (desktop app) is included for creating and managing all content without touching JSON manually — featuring a node-based quest graph, item/boss editors, localization tools, validation, and patchnote generation. Note: the editor is in active development and does not yet cover all framework features.

30+ boss abilities 50+ quest actions 20+ objective types Full localization (RU/EN) Visual Editor

Source code and documentation on GitLab. Licensed under a custom license.

⚠️ BEFORE YOU INSTALL

The mod depends on Arcanum Lib!

Quests from the original VSQuest mod are not compatible. This mod is under active development. It does not add content — it provides the framework to create content. Without quest packs installed, it does nothing. Singleplayer mode is not the primary target and may have bugs, the framework is designed and tested for dedicated servers.

Want a feature added? Describe it in our Discord and we'll consider it for future updates.

📦 EXAMPLE QUEST PACKS

These packs were created for the Alegacy server. They are balanced for our server environment and won't work properly elsewhere, but you can use them as learning examples.

• Alegacy Quest 2 — Full quest pack: 6 NPCs, 4 custom bosses, several mobs, 12+ unique items, 25+ quests with branching storylines, boss hunts, hollow trials, reputation system

Core Systems
📜 Quest Engine

The core system handles the full quest lifecycle: accepting from NPCs, tracking objectives in real-time, completing with rewards, managing cooldowns and prerequisites. All quest data is defined in JSON files within your mod's assets.

  • › NPC Quest Givers — NPCs offer quests from pools, by priority, rotation, or only the active boss hunt. Configurable max available quests, chain cooldowns, single-at-a-time mode
  • › Multi-stage Quests — Sequential stages with auto-progression. Each stage has its own objectives, title, and completion actions. Build long narrative campaigns as a single quest
  • › 20+ Objective Types — Kill, gather, interact, reach waypoint, walk distance, craft, mine, fish, plant, wear items, check variables, time gates, temporal storms, sequences, and more
  • › 50+ Actions — Give/take items, spawn entities, modify attributes, play sounds, show messages, start/complete other quests, open UIs, run commands, add journal entries, grant reputation
  • › Reward System — Item rewards (fixed or random from weighted pool), action rewards, random item rewards with configurable select amount
  • › Prerequisites & Cooldowns — Gate quests behind completed quests, player attributes, or time. Per-player cooldowns prevent farming
  • › Event Hooks — Actions fire on accept, on each stage complete, on quest complete, and on fail. Chain quests together or trigger world events
  • › Multi-domain Loading — Configs load from multiple mods simultaneously. Distribute quest packs as separate mods that all use the same framework
  • › Per-player State — Independent progress tracking with full persistence. Supports both per-player and global quests
📜 Dialogue System
  • › Branching Conversations — Tree-based dialogue with NPC speech and player choices
  • › Conditional Branches — Show/hide options based on attributes, quests, variables
  • › Inline Actions — Execute any quest action directly from dialogue via trigger
  • › Full Localization — All text uses lang keys, supports any language
Boss Systems
Boss Hunt & Hollow Trials

Two boss combat systems: rotating world bosses for group play, and solo challenges with competitive progression.

Boss Hunt (group):

  • › Deterministic rotation with persistent state across restarts
  • › Anchor blocks define spawn locations, tracker item shows distance
  • › Relocation protection during combat, quest system integration

Hollow Trials (solo):

  • › 3 difficulty tiers with escalating stats, solo enforcement
  • › Weekly modifiers (negative/positive/combo), 7 challenge types
  • › Void Shards currency + shop with randomized cases
  • › Configurable quality tiers on rewards, progressive difficulty
Boss Abilities — 30+ modular behaviors

Modular entity behaviors attachable to any entity via JSON. Each supports HP-threshold stages, cooldowns, animations, and sound effects.

Special items that execute quest actions when used. They can have custom names, rich-text descriptions, stat attributes, durability, and multiple interaction modes. A fully configurable quality system lets you define your own tiers with custom names, colors, multipliers, and drop chances.

  • › 15+ Stat Attributes — attackpower, walkspeed, critchance, critdamage, bossdamage, hungerrate, warmth, knockback, rangedaccuracy, maxhealth, and more

4.0.0-rc.6 alegacyvsquest
1.22.1 - 1.22.7
18 Aug 28th at 9:21 AM alegacyvsquest.zip 1-click install

- feat(shops): add per-item purchase sound support — `ShopItemConfig.purchaseSound` overrides the shop-level `purchaseSound` for that item when set
- fix(shops): `ShopNetworkHandler` now resolves the effective purchase sound from `itemCfg.purchaseSound` first, falling back to `shop.purchaseSound`
- feat(backfill): encounter backfill is now data-driven via `EncounterBackfillConfig` and `EncounterBackfillService`
- feat(ambient): added named FX style system for ambient encounters (`config/encounters/fxstyles/`) — Void, Ossuary, and other styles can use different idle/summon/cooldown/dormant particle presets
- refactor(ambient): removed legacy particle color overrides from control block JSON
- fix(ambient): safer stale fight reconciliation using player participation data so `OnBossDefeated` does not fire on a soft reset/despawn or stale cooldown
- fix(ambient): reconcile stale active fight instances when the boss entity no longer exists
- fix(ambient): guard `TrySpawnOrStartAnimation` with `isSpawned` to prevent duplicate boss spawns
- fix(runes): `/avq rune nocd` is now per-player instead of global
- fix(challenges): no-potions and related challenge checks now handle active/passive potion attributes correctly
- feat(dialogue): add reputation-gated dialogue conditions — variables like "reputation.npcId" or "reputation.faction.factionId" can require a minimum reputation value, and "reputation." defaults to NPC scope

- fix(items): charge no longer resets to 0 after relog or server restart — drain timestamps are now kept in-memory per server session instead of persisting on player WatchedAttributes
- fix(profile): achievement unlock date tooltip now shows when viewing other players' profiles, not just your own
- fix(radial): admin radial menu (Shift+Tab) now opens correctly in creative mode for admin role — client-side check no longer blocks when Role is null on client
- feat(profile): added "My Profile" back button at the top of the sidebar when viewing another player's profile — click returns to your own profile
- feat(achievements): admin command `/avq ach grant <achievementId> [playerName]` to grant achievements by id; `/avq ach list` to see all registered ids
- feat(lootchest): loot chest block with configurable loot pool, cooldown, per-player/global access mode, key-item requirement, particle+sound effects on open, and achievement integration (trigger event + direct unlock) — Shift+PCM in creative opens config GUI
- feat(nearplayer): near-player trigger block — detects players in configurable radius, grants achievement from dropdown of discoverable achievements; supports OnEnter/OnStay, per-player/global scope, one-time/cooldown, optional particles — Shift+PCM in creative to configure; data-driven presets via blocktypes JSON
- feat(achievements): added `discoverable` field to AchievementDef — achievements with this flag appear in NearPlayer block dropdown
- feat(achievements): action items can define a `deathAchievementCode`; if self-damage from using the item kills the player, a coded `death` achievement event is fired
- fix(quests): gate objectives (timeofday/landgate) no longer block quest turn-in when configured as gates for other objectives
- fix(quests): quest persistence no longer reports a migration error for new players or empty quest saves
- fix(hollowtrials): killing a trial boss now only completes the quest for the matching tier instead of all active trial quests
- fix(hollowtrials): Void Echo tracker now points to the boss's last known position even when the chunk is unloaded
- fix(bosshunt): TryReloadAnchors no longer clears anchors in unloaded chunks, only stale anchors in loaded chunks are removed
- fix(bosshunt): only the active rotation boss is tracked as active; stale bosses from previous rotations despawn when their chunk loads
- fix(bosshunt): boss isSpawned state is correctly cleared on entity despawn and preserved on chunk unload

This mod really looks very nice and with VSQuest not receiving a lot of updates these days I was really interested but unfortunately the custom-made license does not clarify how we're allowed to even run the mod, only about the source and distribution, which literally means you're not granting that right (even if I get it that's not your intention). It's really sad that having forked and being heavily inspired by a project whose authors shared all of it to you you decided to lock your own behind a very restricting license. For example if one finds a bug and report it to you then they will have to wait for it to be fixed, one day maybe, as they are not even allowed to apply any fix locally on their own server.
Anyway, all the best to you.

Hello, and thank you for the feedback.

  1. I agree that the license may not be worded clearly enough, and we’ll revise it. The restrictions, however, are intentional: we put a lot of effort into this project, and it is a unique feature of our server, so forking and redistribution are restricted. This does not mean that using the mod or original quest packs made with it is forbidden.

  2. The implementation was completely rewritten from scratch and does not contain code or assets from the original project. Calling it a fork is therefore misleading, and we are not required to retain the MIT license.

  3. Most bugs will be fixed quickly, as they may affect our server as well.

  4. If you wish to modify or build upon the framework itself, you’re always welcome to contact us via Discord.

uhhh guys i have a massive brainfart but: if i downloaded suggested quest pack, do i have to spawn npc or they do spawn in the world somewhere?

IWuvCookies, Aug 9th at 11:22 AM

Regarding 1.22.3, if I was to add this to a dedicated server that has already been running, would there be any issues? As would I require to create a new server for any of the quest packs?

@IWuvCookies: Regarding 1.22.3, if I was to add this to a dedicated server that has already been running, would there be any issues? As would I require to create a new server for any of the quest packs?

Always keep a world backup, but the framework itself does not affect world generation or add worldgen content. Because of that, adding it to an already running dedicated server should be completely fine. We do recommend testing quest pack changes on a separate test server before pushing them to the main one - that’s what we do ourselves - but this is purely about content balance and not required

Keep seeing things like this in my server logs,  we havent messed with the quests much yet

I'm trying to create my own npc, but the entity doesn't show up in the quest creative menu? I even tried just duplicating the innkeeper from the Albase questpack.

Right now it will only show up if there are quests assigned to that NPC, which is a bit inconvenient tbh, yeah, but you should be able to spawn them using /entity spawn command as well, for example /entity spawn albase:bosshunter 1

@Stason4ikRU: Как пользоваться спавнером существ из кретива? нажимаю как угодно не работает. -

Если ты про спавнер сущностей который во вкладке специальное, он не работает. Спавнер находится на вкладке предметы квестов

Это что за идеал?

Hi Flajakay
Don't want to be a bother but is there any news on the 1.21.5 backport?

I am hoping to try this out on a community server I am helping out with and I think it will massively solve some of the content and spawning problems we're having.

Thanks again!

Exmortis, Mar 17th at 2:02 AM

Flajakay
You have no idea how helpful that would be. I would be very appreciative!

Flajakay , Mar 16th at 5:41 PM

Exmortis Hi, I can upload version for 1.21.5 if you still need it.

Exmortis, Mar 13th at 4:58 AM

Howdy team
Our server's still on 1.21.5
Is this likely to work on that version, or is there sufficient changes between .5 and .6 that make it non-functional?

Thanks for the great mod.

Flajakay , Mar 1st at 7:11 PM

Jhey It's not really a bug, but you can now disable the automatic completion message in the configuration file. Set the value of "DefaultNotifyOnComplete" to false. Regarding version 1.22, we will migrate to it when a stable release is available.

Jhey, Feb 27th at 5:53 PM

Hello, there is an issue with the ingame chat message sent when completing a quest. The message is sent even if you dont use "notify", and no matter if you use it or not it is bugged, it will just say : (you) completed quest: (quest description) ("quest title")

A more concrete exemple : Jhey completed quest: The guide need a staff to walk. Task:-Bring him 1 stick."Staff test"

I love the framework, please make 1.22 version :D

Could you add back the general overview that you had here in the description? It was very informative. I'm all for directing towards proper documentation, but now there's too little information here to show the layman what changes this has at a glance.
